I don’t really go in for generational arguments, but I think you can make a case for 30 Rock as the ultimate Gen X show: a portrait of try-hard liberals, unfettered capitalists, and straight-up narcissists trying to live meaningful lives within the annihilating vortex of corporate reality

And the cat came back! Found the first version in 2021. In 2025, when I went by, the entire work was gone; only the extra tips of the ears remained. I went by today and there's a whole, new cat face in the center of a giant, halved watermelon! #southminneapolisalleys #MPLSDérive
A picture from 2021 of a garage door painted with a very intense cat. Richly rendered with bold black and purple brush strokes over green and blue, a cat with a very pink nose, wide, intense blue eyes and and open, teeth-bearing mouth, looms from a garage door. The top of the cat's head extends to the garage wall above the door and there are two, triangular pieces of wood attached to the edge of the garage roof to accommodate the tips of the cat's ears. On the lower left of the gargage there is a red square with white kanji text, emulating a hanko stamp. The same garage door in 2025, blank white. The garage walls around the door are green. However, the triangular pieces of wood are still there and still painted with the colors of the previous cat's ears. A new cat face on the garage! The entire garage is painted as if its a halved watermelon: a large, red center, dotted with small, dark seeds takes up the center. It's bordered by a light green rind that becomes light green and then dark green out to the edges of the garage. At the center of the watermelon, is a new, large cat face. This one is maybe a lynx. It's unclear. Painted in a completely different style. More realistic (relatively): Brown and orange with typical cat facial patterns, green eyes close together. The mouth is closed and bright whiskers whisp out to the right and left. The wooden triangles are still there: the right one painted red to extend the watermelon core past the garage roof, the left one is painted blue, trompe-l'œil'ing to match a blue sky, the bottom edge, red, to match the watermelon core.

Weird reality of the Twin Cities is essentially living inside a double blind experiment for every policy imaginable. Really goes to show that activists were quite correct that the pause was about giving ppl extra time to catch up on back rent, not just delaying the inevitable as the mayor argued

Sept. 25, 1926: Ford Motor Co. says it will permanently shift to a five-day week in which factory workers and office staff will get Saturdays off. Pay scales will be altered so employees receive about the same wages as before. A trial period showed the shorter workweek to be more efficient.

this isn't even a moral judgment on the party all that much. I mean it is, but less than you think, it's more just an observation that the Democratic Party is an organism that responds to stimuli in predictable ways once you learn its biology.

actual Democratic Party history tells you that you need to whap the party with a rolled-up newspaper when they start getting precious about your key issue, otherwise they will keep going in the direction you hate. this is just how the party works

When a child enrolls in any school other than the public school district in which they live, a set amount of money is literally subtracted from the budget of that public school district. That's the way it works. There is intentional confusion and misdirection about this, but that's the deal.

died, the radical “economist” Milton Friedman writes an op-ed calling for school choice as a way to get rid of those meddlesome public schools and “fix” them with the magic of the market. That’s where Minnesota is. We betrayed the promise of the Minnesota Miracle that made us the education state

You also need to message external conversations for people who don't already agree with you. Being factually or morally correct doesn't mean that you're going to be successful at being persuasive and you need to have a model for persuasion beyond those things.

Way too many centre-left people of a policywonkish persuasion simply do not understand the concept of hitting a pressure point. It doesn't matter if what people are saying about datacentres is "wildeyed" or "histrionic." The modern tech industry is bad and should be witchhunted a bit.

Last point: A really important part of cultivating political influence is knowing when and how to eat shit. Lots of people, including me, don't have the temperament for that, which is fine. But if you can't eat a little shit now and then, you're limiting your ability to influence live policymaking.

Kelly, the owner of Nourish Cafe in Jamaica, Queens, was a longtime fan of former mayor Eric Adams, the centrist Democrat who left office plagued by scandals. She now considers herself a fan of Mamdani.

“I don’t really care about those labels nowadays,” Kelly said, when asked about Mamdani being a socialist. “I like that he stands for making sure nobody seems to feel marginalized, like we’re all in this together, we all win together.

“If that’s what socialism is,” she added, “I’m all for it!”

A theme here is that if a person inside city government intervenes on behalf of a restaurant losing parking spots or a random driver getting a parking ticket, that's seen as constituent services. If another government insider works on behalf of keeping people alive, that's seen as advocacy.
