Today Trump told Minnesotans to "fight back" against our Somali neighbors. This is dangerous, despicable, and should be condemned by everyone. 1/

Honestly. If that guy’s strategy is to wear us down, then he doesn’t understand Minnesota and our winters. We endure and thrive because of each other. To my Somali neighbors and friends - you are needed and loved.

They started texting with a 16-year-old. After two years, they offered to sell him a gun. They consider that "stopping a terrorist attack." And they are calling it heroic. What an absolute embarrassment.

Getting off the plane, most normie MN dude was talking to his buddy about the kid they arrested today, calling BS from the get-go. “Yeah, it was a two year operation, so he was 16 when it started!” “That’s how you know it’s all them! What 16 year old would stay committed to *anything* that long?!”

Turns out, #southminneapolisalleys don’t have the Garage Art market cornered. #Torontodérive
A double doored garage. The left door is painted a face. Green hair surrounds a brown face with large, burnt orange eyes. The pupils are large, black hearts. On the right door, alternating orange and blue bands radiate out from behind a portrait of a person with dark hair and dark eye. Their head tilts just a bit to the right. Just above their head to the left is an orange sun with a hint of a face. On the right side of their hair, are two pink flowers and behind that side, we see the Earth.

"I want you to know it too." Two poems by Najwan Darwish from NO ONE WILL KNOW YOU TOMORROW (Yale Margellos, 2024), transl. Kareem James Abu-Zeid, for #smallPoemSunday. @tomsnarsky.bsky.social
Land

Land, how much misery
you've brought to your people.
They're wretched when they have you,
wretched when they lose you.

Land, if only
we could inhabit the clouds.Lost

That which is lost for forever,
that which that no one knows
but me–
I want you to know it too.
If it's lost but you know it
it's as if
it was never lost.

My hands are open,
and in every home I pour it out–
the childhood
I once had.

Walked out and there was a hubbub. People all walking in one direction, people parking. We see a long line forming. The line is for an about to open pickle festival! THERE IS A GUY IN A PICKLE SUIT, HANDING OUT PICKLE TOTE BAGS.
In Toronto, a line forms for a pickle festival. People stand, laughing, on the right, a person in a green pickle suit, hands out green pickle themed tote bags.

We were in Toronto about ten minutes before we walked past an event space where a wedding reception was ending and the party was drunkly and happily stumbling out as LCD’s “All My Friends” was blasting from deep inside the venue.

Before they put up that hotel, the sunsets from concourse A must’ve been pretty epic.
A bright orange sunset obscured with by a building on the left side of the frame. The low grey cloud deck is lit up by the low angled sunset.

After the show tonight, guy asks me: "What was that song you were so into?" (It was Sleepwalkers off "No" (but I only know it off one of the "Here Comes" DVDs)) First, I ask him how old he is, because I'm going to pull the Dad Thing on him because it's a song I've heard 500 times with my kids.

Another pre-gummy kicking in thought: what if the innocence we’re searching for is just the innocence we had when we thought gluing those whistling do-hickeys on out front bumpers would keep the deer from crossing our paths?

Got a summer job washing dishes at Grandview Lodge. I ended up hanging out with the dope-smoking college kids who lived in the decrepit, on-property housing. Partying one night, Genius of Love came on the TV. It probably wasn't the first time I saw the video, but it felt like the first time.

Still remember first seeing the video. On HBO, I'm pretty sure, we didn't have MTV until the middle of the decade. I had no idea who or what Tom Tom Club was then, had maybe only barely heard of Talking Heads too. As time showed, this song really feels like it's been playing forever, reemerging.

Memorials #southminneapolisalleys #mplsdérive
A beige garage with a brown garage door spray painted orange in the center "Justice for George", referring to George Floyd. That orange paint is a little faded. Heart-breakingingly, on either side of the center text are two green spray painted hearts. In the left heart, spray painted in orange "Alex Pretti". In the right heart "Renee Good". To the right, on the blue City of Minneapolis recycling bin, in orange "ICE OUT".

Happened to talk to this garage owner. Just put this one up this spring. "Just felt like I had to do *something*", they said. #southminneapolisalleys #mplsdérive
A white garage spray painted with a Banksy quote. Red lettering reads "There is nothing more dangerous than someone who wants to make the world a better place - Banksy" Stenciled onto the garage in black are a couple of Banksy rats. One low and to the left, holds a roller, as if the rat is gluing up posters. On the right, at just the right height, it appears the rat is on one of the trash bins, a stenciled rat with a red heart just above it. In the upper right, a window is stenciled onto the garage, the lower pane broken by a TV that's been thrown through it. The TV and shards of glass, sailing into the space above a person sitting in the bottom center, holding a sign that says "I WANT CHANGE (keep your coins).

No matter how excited I am to see a show at 1st Ave, I love my own, small traditions: Smol drink at home, buzzed shower, put on the nice shoes, drive down Park, left on 7th, park in the Dayton's ramp and walk over and get in line with the other wonderful weirdos, waiting.

My grandfather on the right, Early 1900s, with some friends, taking a break from lumberjacking out by Avon, rockin' two pairs of pants to go with his Grain Belt and stogie.
Early 1900s. Classic everyone being incredibly stiff and still for the camera shot. 1908-1912 was my dad's guess. Four men sit around a table, looking at the camera. Each has a cigar in their mouths, the table is loaded up with bottles of Grain Belt. A couple of the men are holding glasses filled with beer.
