Thank you Cleverson Lima for sharing your experience of fee-free #OA publishing @jexpbiol.bsky.social via our #ReadAndPublish agreement with University of Kentucky @ukresearch.bsky.social Read Cleverson’s paper: doi.org/10.1242/jeb.... Is your institution participating too? bit.ly/3O7BxGi
We were excited to submit our paper to Journal of Experimental Biology because The Company of Biologists uses surplus processing charges to develop and implement programs that benefit our community, which is a great way to reward scientists (directly or indirectly) for their valuable volunteered time for peer-reviewing and editing. The grant that funded our work had already expired when our paper was submission-ready unfortunately, but the University of Kentucky Libraries and The Company of Biologists had a Read & Publish agreement that allowed us to publish in the journal we wanted AND make it accessible for everyone! So, I’m glad that this type of agreement exists and I hope it continues to bring in new institutions to participate.

The ability to publish fee-free Open Access through the Read & Publish agreement is critical for our lab. Scientific funding is always tight, so eliminating article processing charges ensures that our budget stays focused directly on driving scientific discovery. As active peer reviewers who contribute our time to the scientific community, we highly appreciate a seamless path to publishing in top-tier journals.

Did you know… JCS is one of the affiliate journals of @reviewcommons.org, a platform for high-quality, journal-independent peer review of manuscripts from the life sciences before submission to a journal. #PRW2026 #PeerReviewWeek Our collection: journals.biologists.com/collection/1...
JCS cover: Deconvolved confocal images showing a lateral view of the tail of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, highlighting the localisation of epidermal AGEF-1 (an orthologue of BIG2; gold, cyan and orange puncta in the top, middle and bottom images, respectively) and RAB-35 (cyan, green and yellow blobs and striated patterns in the top, middle and bottom images, respectively). AGEF-1 interacts with RAB-35 in the nematode epidermis to modulate the integrity of touch-sensing nerves embedded within the skin. See article by I. Bonacossa-Pereira et al. The whole process of publishing with The Company of Biologists in Journal of Experimental Biology was smooth and quick, and I was very happy to discover that Lund University was part of its Read & Publish agreement. Publication fees can be a considerable constraint, especially for early-career researchers like me, so it’s great that there are agreements, such as this one, that allow us to share our work freely with the scientific community. I was also excited to learn that a tree has been planted for our paper, such a great initiative!

Neither I nor my collaborators had funds available to pay for Open Access, even though we very much wanted to make our work as widely available as possible. I was extremely excited when the Development editorial office told me that my University participates in the Read & Publish program. I had no idea! This is an exceptional route to Open Access – especially in these days when the use of extramural funds for publications are being limited.
