igure 2. Degenerate models show different responses to partial or complete deletion of one current. Model neuron A and model neuron B have the same constellation of ion channels, but with different values of their maximal conductances. Despite this, under ‘control’ conditions, the models are degenerate and show very similar bursting behavior (black voltage traces in the top line of each panel). The currentscapes [42] shown in color are a visualization of the amount each of the currents is contributing to the total outward or total inward currents in the models. Note that in model neuron A there is virtually no A current (purple), while in model neuron B the A current is quite large. Again, this is degeneracy, as the two sets of parameters used in the models are appreciably different, but the output is very similar. The right-hand panels show the results of decreasing the maximal conductance of one of the Ca 2+ currents from 100% to 75%, 50%, 25% or 0% relative to the control. Although the 75% panel is noticeably different in the two models, it is striking that at 50% deletion the models are again degenerate, and produce similar behavior. Nonetheless at 25% and 0% ,the two models behave markedly different.

Mosquitoes use CO2 to sense if humans are nearby. Chih-Ying Su explores a @plosbiology.org study showing that CO2-sensing neurons in #mosquitoes can amplify each other’s signals, creating a neural echo chamber 🧪 Paper: buff.ly/jk3046I Primer: buff.ly/lf5AOVg
Comparative circuit architecture of CO2- and odor-sensing OSNs in mosquitoes and flies. Left: Insect olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) expressing the same receptor converge onto a single glomerulus (circle) in the antennal lobe, where they synapse onto projection neurons (PNs). This study focuses on two circuit motifs: recurrent OSN-to-OSN connections (for signal amplification) and feedforward OSN-to-PN connections (for information relay). Middle: OSNs also synapse onto inhibitory local neurons (LNs) When multiple OSNs are co-activated, they recruit local neurons to mediate global lateral inhibition for divisive normalization. In mosquitoes, both CO2- and odor-sensing OSNs express GABA receptors (likely at their axonal terminals), rendering them susceptible to this inhibition. Only CO2-sensing OSNs exhibit strong recurrent connections, which amplify their output signal and protect it from divisive normalization. Right: Strong recurrent connectivity is observed among mosquito CO2-sensing OSNs, but is absent in either CO2- or odor-sensing OSNs of fruit flies.
