There is this fallacy that the cyclists getting killed by drivers are running red lights and doing wheelies in the middle of the lane, when the reality is that cyclists get doored or right hooked. It's easier to have this worldview instead of acknowledging the fundamental changes needed.

Look at this gorgeous & heartbreaking crop art by Minnesota artist Jennifer Nelson, inspired by “Guernica.” Thanks @badlawyerpod.bsky.social for bringing it to our attention
Crop art in the style of Picasso’s Guernica. The image depicts a commentary on the federal government’s invasion of Minneapolis and the terror and resilience of the people. A loon is central, its wings spread in protection or in flight. A man lies on the ground, cell phone in hand. An abstract figure with its arms up holds an “ICE OUT” sign.

I think people would be less likely to buy large vehicles if it was a huge pain in the ass to drive them here, especially in cities. Higher gas prices are part of it. But there should be extra fees and taxes based on weight. Parking your giant Suburban should be incredibly difficult. etc.

I think we're within a few years of Democrats/liberals/leftists being forced to make a hard choice between coddling violent drivers in our cities -- blocking traffic enforcement, defending "free" parking, saying $75,000 cars are for the "working class" -- and realizing those are fascist positions.

There's a reason why Somerville hasn't had a traffic death in 4 years. The city isn't perfect, but they've made a concerted effort to design many streets around people and not cars. You can still drive, but you're going to have to do so slowly and while paying attention.

Somerville is intentionally making roads harder to drive on. It’s getting results. - The Boston Globe
To make roads safer, the city says, sometimes you have to put some obstacles in drivers' way.

The fallacy of the climate movement's electric car advocacy is belief it's faster to get people into EVs than into walkable homes where they can drive less. The reality is it's probably ten times faster to build homes in walkable neighborhoods than to convince people to buy electric cars.

If, as speculated, this was caused by the driver hitting the accelerator due to human error or medical event, let's be 100% clear: That does not make it "just one of those things." That does not make it "unforeseeable." That does not make it "unpreventable." This is not an acceptable failure mode.

See also: Transit is not a natural resource. Places that have it have invested in it. If it is low quality, patchy or absent in your sub/urban area, it is because it has not been invested in. I bet motor infrastructure has though. That did not happen by accident & it does not have to stay that way.
