The B65 bus is legendarily slow. It makes a stop on literally every block. Speeding that bus up is *helping* senior citizens and elderly people. It's making the bus more reliable for poor people. Crazy work from the New York Post.

As usual, Doug gets most of the good points in first. But also, since when was the city bus "gentrified transit?" and since when did senior citizens and elderly people not take NYC busses? Bus routes in NYC serve disproportionately poorer people and senior citizens.

For many years, and many administrations, NYC has lectured us all on "supporting local biz" and "investing in communities" while screwing both by not paying its bills on time. Community-based city contractors literally out here struggling to make payroll bc of this. Unacceptable.

Student passes are a city funded program, thereby making the effort a collaboration between city and state. In reality, NYCDOE, State and MTA collaborate on the program. The City also has representation on the MTA board.

The way transit is treating NYC students is a scandal. Passes look like this after just a few days. This makes students more likely to skip fares, which is deeply ironic given the admin’s emphasis on free busses.

NYC has the largest regional rail network in the USA. Pairing dense housing development on/next to stations, fare rationalization and 6 train-per-hour frequencies would vastly reshape the affordability across the region.

Citibike historically barely breaks even. This year I imagine it’s probably in the red because of snow. Getting to service improvements and lower fares will require new infrastructure and probably an operating subsidy. Basically a program restructuring.

One thing worth pointing out is the lack of consistent design thesis that guides renovations and new station design in nyc. Even new stations look different. London has a 225 page doc that outlines the design and UX principles for each station. NYCTA should have one too.

Everyone's focusing on the big "Empire Bins" but nobody is talking about the fact that buildings <10 units and retail waste is containerized since 2025 and it's been a revelation. Yes the small bins can be annoying, but it's 1000000000x better than nasty, smelly leaky bags.

I don't really understand why all older NYC subway stations can't be retrofitted to ESI (Enhanced Station Initiative) standards for lighting, way-finding, and general aesthetic. ESI had some issues, namely the lack of accessibility but overall treatment was best I've seen. Before/After at 57th.
