Title: Just announced! Three new Gruffalo books commissioned from bestselling authors!

Lee Chilld:
The Gruffalo just wants a quiet life, but when a crime syndicate moves into the deep dark wood, he must use his terrible claws and the terrible teeth in his terrible jaws to protect the fellow.

Sally Rooney:
The Gruffalo moves to contemporary Dublin. He
ill ever see past his orange eyes, purple prickles and poisonous wart.

Kazuo Ishiguro:
After a long absence, the gruffalo returns to the forest and attempts to make sense of his past. Encounters with a mouse, a fox, an owl and a snake uncover long-buried memories, regrets and revelations.

The worst thing we managed to do is teach liberals about how to recognize certain symbols but not understand the rest of the context behind them. Or how to read the rest of a Wikipedia article. Hm, maybe the historical Massachusetts symbol has relevance at the Massachusetts show
The following year, on April 29, 1776, 21111 the Massachusetts Council established the flag of the state navy with a resolution stating: " ...that
the Colours be a white Flag, with a green Pine Tree, and the Inscription,
'An Appeal to
Heaven!"[]I2][11]
The pine tree flag has been described as one of the most important flags in the colonies during 1775-1776, and the central image of the pine tree stood for wealth and power, in part because the tall trees were so important to the
Royal Navy, as masts for warships.
The flag was a popular regional New England flag and was used to muster troops during the American Revolution before Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes. The flag may have served as partial inspiration for liberty trees and liberty poles. 5]New England Revolution pine tree kitFull name

More politicians like Brady. Just aggrieved dudes who want to help protect their cities and don't actually want a ton of power as much as they want to help people and make the place they live not suck.

Pen, watercolor, black & white charcoal pencil.

Another featured piece from the Spooky Pants book.

A man in a sweater stands with his hands on his hips looking out of a large window with the curtains open. Things aren’t looking good outside, reader. A massive winged demon is emerging from the clouds as dozens of little ghosts and bone demons rip through the sky. On the ground below we see townsfolk running through the grass. Our man in the window is in no mood for this. He lets us know, “Oh, I am in no mood for this.” His dog looks out the window as well, wagging its tail.

Fantasia (1940) inspired drawing. I think I could’ve gone a little heavier with the chaos outside but we’ll try again with fresh drawings this October. I like how the clouds turned out. Trying to balance my sloppy lines with more detail can be tricky but I think we achieved a good result.

Suppose you have many copies of an outdated translation of the Bible. Does anyone make bookplates/stickers that give context to the updates? I’d put them in the Bibles in the youth Sunday school room at church if they existed.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel, we see two stick figures. Text above them labels one as "book smart" and one as "street smart".
In the second panel we zoom out and see the two stick figures in nature next to a tree. There is a sign pointing out of the panel that says "LIFE".
In the third panel we see the street smart stick figure take the hand of the book smart stick figure. The street smart stick figure says "Come, I will guide you".
In the fourth panel we zoom out again and see the two stick figures walking in the direction of the "LIFE" sign. The book smart street figure looks back at the tree as they are walking and says, "I know a lot of facts about that tree".

I don’t know how to figure this out, but I wonder if/how the Ohio/Indiana/WV/PA floods were exacerbated by decisions made at the federal level in the past year. And if it was designed to distract good people from the other horrors of the moment. And to allow strategic parties to rescue the rurals.

Anybody who’s still advocating putting these tools anywhere near a school is not doing so despite the cognitive collapse they cause, but because of it. dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn...
Abstract
Using 30 months of panel data on 26,811 Chinese students in grades 7-12, we study how generative Al affects homework productivity and learning. The data combine monthly closed-book exams, high-school and college entrance exams, and homework scores and completion time across nine subjects. We exploit staggered Al adoption in a difference-in-differences design. Al adoption raises homework scores by 18% and reduces completion time by 30%, but lowers monthly exam scores by 20% within six months.
High-stakes entrance-exam scores fall by 18 and 24%, with the full penalty emerging only after about two years. The losses are largest in social science subjects, followed by STEM and languages, and are especially large for junior students, high-achieving students, and boys. The learning losses are concentrated among roughly 80% of Al users whose behavior is consistent with homework outsourcing, as indicated by exceptionally short homework completion time coupled with high homework scores. Al users who maintain similar homework completion time as non-Al users experience small learning losses.

If you’re watching Fauci’s testimony remember that science isn’t an ideology. It doesn’t lie. It evolves. COVID-19 was a once-in-a-century pandemic caused by a brand-new virus, recommendations changed because the evidence changed. That’s not deception. That’s how it works.

Let's do a reading experiment. substack.com/@sarahkendzi...
The “folks don’t read long-form writing anymore” takes ignore the biggest change: paywalls. Podcasts, Tik Toks, and memes are free. Long-form, thoughtful writing is often prohibitively expensive. Articles need to be as accessible as possible if you want folks to appreciate the written word.

I keep my newsletter free for all. Those who can pay, do. Those who can’t afford to pay can also read everything. No one is priced out. If I can make this work as one woman in Missouri, why can’t giant corporations do it? Take down the paywalls for one week as an experiment and see if folks get more informed and start reading longer works again.

Why am I a patriot despite all the terrible things America has done? Bc the idea of America is worth fighting to make real. Take it away Puddlegum:
One word, Ma'am," he said, coming back from the fire; limping, because of the pain. "One word. All you've been saying is quite right, I shouldn't wonder. I'm a chap who always liked to know the worst and then put the best face I can on it. So I won't deny any of what you said. But there's one more thing to be said, even so. Suppose we have only dreamed, or made up, all those things-trees and grass and sun and moon and stars and Aslan himself. Suppose we have. Then all I can say is that, in that case, the made-up things seem a good deal more important than the real ones. Suppose this black pit of a kingdom of yours is the only world. Well, it strikes me as a pretty poor one. And that's a funny thing, when you come to think of it. We're just babies making up a game, if you're right. But four babies playing a game can make a play-world which licks your real world hollow. That's why I'm going to stand by the play world. I'm on Aslan's side even if there isn't any Aslan to lead it. I'm going to live as like a Narnian as I can even if there isn't any Narnia. So, thanking you kindly for our supper, if these two gentlemen and the young lady are ready, we're leaving your court at once and setting out in the dark to spend our lives looking for Overland. Not that our lives will be very long, I should think; but that's a small loss if the world's as dull a place as you say.

Today marks 250 years since a small group of newspaper editors, farmers, and soldiers signed a document declaring our nation's independence — a truth that feels self-evident now but was revolutionary then.
What a privilege us Americans have, to live in a nation that every one of its inhabitants can shape. What an honor us New Yorkers have, to look out over our city's waters from the shores where so many Americans bravely entered their country for the first time.
Today and all days, let us remember that patriotism is not pretending our nation is without flaws. Patriotism is every act of righteous dissent — because loving our country means fighting for the best version of it.
Happy Fourth of July, New York City.
