as an artist I'd love this but I also think everyone else should also get it. I think UBI should just be default. But I think that would transform the economy into TRULY being the free marketplace of ideas, the car capitalists chase and hope they never catch lol #politics

THIS is what UBI is for: freeing us up to do what matters to each cleaning up public areas? producing art? volunteering at a shelter - animal or human? caring for a family member, mentoring, teaching, or just being able to *rest*

This is why it's such nonsense for anyone to say that with UBI, people will lose meaning. First, jobs aren't any source of meaning for many people with jobs. Second, the jobs people can't say no to are in the way of a getting a lot of meaningful work done. And third, the rich seem to find meaning.

Excellent thread! There *are* rewards for being A Good Guy Who Speaks Up even if they are not immediately obvious or publicly bestowed. First, integrity is its own reward. Maybe you didn’t save the world or change hearts & minds. But if you held the line on not making it worse, that’s something.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

Screen shot of paragraph written by John Lorinc in Spacing which says: Spacing last week obtained copies of the RFP documents. They include — contrary to the premier’s anti-Trump rhetoric — a form enabling U.S. firms to participate. The contract, to be concluded by the end of 2028, will be tendered and overseen by the Ontario ministry of transportation. Judging by the way the RFP has been scoped, the winning bid will reveal the extent to which the minister, Prabmeet Sarkaria, and Ford, have put their fingers on the scale.

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

As hockey fans complain about men from the 2018 Junior Team Canada players being allowed back onto NHL teams, I've been thinking about how a young man's potential hockey career is seen as far more worthy of protecting than a young woman. Even when players of their skill level are a dime a dozen.
