Cover of Content Machines: Reading and Writing in the Platform Era by Sarah Brouillette. The cover is white with a tablet featuring six colorful digitally drawn images of romance book covers. There are blue thumbs ups and red hearts covering the images. Beneath is written, “Reading and Writing in the Platform Era” in bold. Below this, in lighter text, a summary of Content Machines begins. The title is written vertically in the bottom right parallel to the tablet. The author’s name is directly after in a smaller serif font.

This isn't just a think piece saying they disagree with PEN America; they actually went back and examined at the data and reporting — including a key claim that a literary agent was selling far fewer books by Jewish and Israeli authors in the US — and found it lacking. Fascinating work.

just submitted the book manuscript (10 months late), hoping this converts the advance contract into a publishing contract, and I also blame bluesky for the page here
body text
With all that said, in no way in this book intended to be a comprehensive account of medieval reason; nor can it do more than indicate, here, an awareness of the operations of “reason” activated by Immanuel Kant or with the affiliated set of anti-rationalist thinkers of the counter-Enlightenment; nor more than implicate modern accounts of reason or the bizarre edges of already bizarre twenty-first century “rationalist” movements, like the murderous Zizians; nor more than acknowledge, here, behavioral economics and the science of rational-decision making (as well as, I should say, the replicability crisis in such fields). Much must be left out, because my concern is with the centrality of the claim to reason to the claim to being human. This did not much concern Kant; it was of paramount importance to thirteenth-century university thinkers and to many of the thinkers they drew on. Since classical philosophy, we have been called “the rational, mortal animal.” This fundamental definition distinguishes us both from immortal beings and, more practically, from the other mortal animals, or, to use the common parlance, from animals. It must be said that not every medieval reference to reason was an attempt to account

footnotes run
Burton, “How ‘Post-Rationalism’ Is Reshaping Tech Culture”; Ratliff, “Zizians.” Unfortunately for us, the so-called “rationalists” are as I write this note intermeshed with the highest levels of government and technoindustry, represented inter alia by such figures as the autodidact Eliezer Yudkowsky (responsible for a jaw-droppingly influential work of fan fiction, Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (2010, and some 660,000 words): I wish I were joking).
