It's obviously impt not to let the AI labs write their own regulation, but I feel like if Exxon researchers HAD spent the 1970s raising the alarm about CO2, some of us here woulda decided ""climate change"" was a monopolistic conspiracy against 3rd-world state-owned oil & working-class automobility

investigation was originally developed for The New York Times, where it underwent eight months of editing, multiple rounds of fact-checking, and independent replication of the underlying methodology. The piece had a scheduled publication date when requests for comment were sent. It was only after the Times reached out to the subjects of the investigation for routine comment that the Elias Law Group, representing the DCCC and DSCC, sent a cease-and-desist letter demanding the paper not publish. Although the paper's fact-checkers and legal department later cleared the piece before sending out a second round of requests for comment, the Times ultimately decided to kill the piece.3:27
a4democracy.substack.com
The piece was subsequently slated for publication at The Bulwark, where it underwent additional fact-checking, data verification, and legal review. When requests for comment were sent to the subjects of the investigation, lawyers representing the Progressive Turnout Project and Mothership Strategies likewise responded with legal letters demanding that the article not run.
From there, publication was repeatedly delayed. The piece cleared successive rounds of legal review. When I asked for a committed publication date after months of delay, The Bulwark conditioned publication on my accepting an extensive rewrite prepared by its editors that, in my assessment, removed key empirical findings without explanation, introduced claims contradicted by the data and fact-checking record, and presented the subjects' legal defenses as my own conclusions. When I declined to publish under those terms, the piece was released back to me.

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

I've watched the right use this communication strategy (and close cousins of it) my entire life - and of course, it is much older. quick examples: "solar panels fail at night", "not all men" etc. In each case a true statement is made, yet each is a case of the bad kind of propaganda. 2/

I think characterizing all this as the result of the “culture war,” as FIRE does, is wildly inaccurate. But this passage rings true: the problem with massed online attention is that it seizes your identity and turns you into a caricature for people to performatively attack or defend. It’s awful.

the concern with the Arday story isn’t the fact of the media coverage, it’s the volume. it’s perfectly reasonable that there would be some coverage of the story, and basically indefensible that there was as much as there was.

I had a great time talking with @annhandley.bsky.social @cloeax.bsky.social and @sashastiles.bsky.social at the @wbur.org festival about AI /creativity. The transcript of our chat is now posted and here's something I said that is central to how I've been thinking about AI /1
JR: I think we have to keep giving young people opportunities where we say we care what you think; we care what you have to say, and we have to scaffold experiences where what they think actually matters. What my students want is to be a person who has something to say. But they want to figure out what will that mean or look if nobody's cares what they think, because a chatbot can generate something faster? I think that's actually the challenge.

I'm much more interested in that challenge than how we stop people from cheating (although someone has to worry about that). How do we figure out how you – student — can matter, and your ideas can matter, in a world that's just so crowded with so much output.

Wow, the OMB/NSF's attempt to eliminate the National Center for Atmospheric Research (among many other cuts to CO) sure seems to not just be climate denial but part of a coordinated effort to punish CO for convicting Tina Peters of tampering with voting machines www.denverpost.com/2026/08/14/c...
Screenshot from linked article:

The Justice Department’s pardon attorney told Trump ally Steve Bannon that federal officials were putting “the right kind of pressure” on the state to secure Peters’ transfer; Trump had also promised “harsh measures” if the former clerk remained incarcerated.

Four days before Underwood’s email, the president publicly issued Peters a symbolic pardon.

Within days of that “brainstorm call,” a conservative media outlet reported that the Department of Energy was cutting $615 million in funding intended for Colorado. The Department of Transportation said it would end $109 million in grant funding to the state. The Office of Management and Budget moved to shutter the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder. Federal emergency officials rejected disaster relief funding for fire-scarred areas on the Western Slope. The Department of Agriculture ordered the state to swiftly re-certify 100,000 Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients.

Before the month was out, Trump vetoed legislation that would have brought clean water to parts of the state.
