Went to see two 20 year old art students commence an installation where they live eat & sleep in GalleryX, Dublin for a week while continuously drawing self-portraits. Looking forward to returning in a week to see the results.

The FAI’s handling of the Nations League fixtures shows that when it comes to standing up for those who have no voice, words are not enough. It’s actions that count.

It is wild how, in the North of Ireland, it is the costumed bigots with tribal drums & emblems, led by convicted paedophiles, who are on the side of the law, while bereaved mothers are the illegal gathering. Oh I forgot, that's just the new normal now.

I don’t think people hear the voices of the mothers, who earlier walked to the police line with their signs screaming “why? Why? Why would you do this? What if this had to be your nephew? Why?” The pain in their voice is unbearable. Unbearable.

Whenever someone smart says, ‘I asked ChatGPT and it said xyz,’ I’m reminded of Baldur Bjarnason’s excellent article ‘The LLMentalist Effect: how chat-based Large Language Models replicate the mechanisms of a psychic’s con.’ softwarecrisis.dev/letters/llme... #quitgpt #TheAICon @baldurbjarnason.com
The intelligence illusion seems to be based on the same mechanism as that of a psychic’s con, often called cold reading. It looks like an accidental automation of the same basic tactic.

By using validation statements, such as sentences that use the Forer effect, the chatbot and the psychic both give the impression of being able to make extremely specific answers, but those answers are in fact statistically generic.

The psychic uses these statements to give the impression of being able to read minds and hear the secrets of the dead.

The chatbot gives the impression of an intelligence that is specifically engaging with you and your work, but that impression is nothing more than a statistical trick.

This idea was first planted in my head when I was going over some of the statements people have been making about the reasoning of these ‘AI’.

I first thought that these were just classic cases of tech bubble enthusiasm, but no, ‘AI’ has both taken a different crowd and the believers in the ‘AI’ bubble sound very different from those of prior bubbles.

At EU level, the Irish Government proposing any tech policy immediately renders that policy suspect, if not automatically unacceptable. We are seen as nought a paid for and every time our Govt does something in this area it reaffirms that perception.

The enormous affinity I feel towards the Scots writer Alasdair Gray only grew stronger when I learned he not only said “Work as if you live in the early days of a better nation" but also "Man is the pie that bakes & eats himself".

“Who did the council fight?"
"It split in two and fought itself."
"That's suicide!"
"No, ordinary behaviour. The efficient half eats the less efficient half and grows stronger. War is just a violent way of doing what half the people do calmly in peacetime: using the other half for food, heat, machinery and sexual pleasure. Man is the pie that bakes and eats himself, and the recipe is separation."
"I refuse to believe men kill each other just to make their enemies rich."
"How can men recognize their real enemies when their family, schools and work teach them to struggle with each other and to believe law and decency come from the teachers?"
