the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

So, not only will it take more than 50 years to pay back the current trans mountain pipeline at the new lower rates, but 60% of that oil is going to the US so it’s not doing a whole lot to diversify. But one more pipeline will fix that right? Right?

Privatizing airports is a terrible deal for travellers, workers, and the public purse. Around the world, it has led to higher travel costs, fewer jobs and worse working conditions.

Bottom line: voters want candidates who stand for something, who have values that matter more to them than winning elections. When candidates make it clear that they'll say anything to win, voters learn that they can't trust anything those candidates say.

The ultra-wealthy keep trying to pit the rest of us against each other with scare tactics ("communists!" "men in the ladies room!!" "brown people!!!" "drag queens!!!!") to keep us from noticing that our real problem is THEM. They want us to fight *any* war—except a class war. Happy Labor Day.

If you want 1.5C, 1.8C, 2C, overshoot, no-overshoot, etc, then they all require the same thing: rapid short-term emission reductions reaching net zero CO2 emissions as soon as possible. This has been clear from the IPCC Special Report on 1.5C, which depicts "overshoot" on its cover! 1/

#ClimateChange is ridiculously expensive! — more so than phasing out fossil fuels. A new study says that NY State will surpass half a trillion dollars on infrastructure spending related to climate change by 2050. Now this is just one state. And one type of cost! www.nytimes.com/2026/07/23/n...

As temperatures rise, you get more intense fires because a warmer atmosphere dries out the fuel. See www.theclimatebrink.com/p/canadas-bo... In other places, as temperatures increase, you get more intense rainfall because a warmer atmosphere holds more water vapor.

Taken together, this is a body of evidence that acknowledges that climate change has moved lower on the list of voters' priorities, but it shows that the recommendation to back away from pro-climate policy commitments is wrong, and likely a vote-loser. [13/13]

Among people open to voting Democrat, making climate a priority yields a 5.9 point boost. Making climate a top priority yields a 7.2 point boost. If the climate hush/climate backlash theory were true, these effects would be negative, not positive! [6/13]

A tripling of emissions by 2100 was probably never plausible. But a doubling was. The fact that we're no longer on that path is progress — not, as some pundits claim, an indictment of climate science. And we still have a long way to go get emissions to zero and stabilize global temperatures 11/11

Reminder that “UBI provides a disincentive to work” is just fancy repackaging of “the poor are poor because they refuse to work hard to better themselves”. (And before you @ me, yes there are valid arguments against UBI - even though I don’t agree with them, but this isn’t a valid one)

This isn’t an issue. EV batteries last longer than most people seem to think. That doesn’t mean someone who’s barely scraping by can afford to buy one (the main point in this thread), but if you do need to buy, there’s not much need to fear a battery about to die. Check the SOH. That’s it.

Today in AI: Canada rejected the PR application of a McMaster postdoc from the Sorbonne who works in the immunology of aging because the generative AI being used to process applications (😱) entirely hallucinated her credentials. Everyone involved should be fired. archive.is/ELrCI#select...
Kémy Adé was shocked by the immigration refusal letter she received.
In rejecting her permanent residence application, the Immigration Department cited her current job duties, which included wiring and assembling control circuits, building control and robot panels, programming and troubleshooting. The department said these duties didn’t match the Canadian work experience she claimed.
Well, no, they didn’t. Adé is a post-doctoral research fellow and guest teacher at McMaster University — and those skills are not part of her repertoire. Nor are they what she submitted in her immigration application a year ago.
“I saw this language about this job description that has nothing to do with me,” said the health scientist from France, who has a PhD from Sorbonne University in the immunology of aging. “I was disoriented how this could happen.”
But a disclaimer at the bottom of the refusal letter might provide a hint.
It’s believed to be the first time that the department explicitly referred to the use of generative AI to support application processing in immigration refusals. The disclaimer also noted that all generated content was verified by an officer and that generative AI was not used to make or recommend a decision.

In other words: if the GOP just took the offer on the table, FEMA, Coast Guard, and TSA would all be funded at normal levels and ICE would have ~3x historic levels because of BUB. And yet they are demanding more in spite of an obvious lack of need.

Denial of reproductive rights in the name of the personhood of the embryo/fetus is denial of the personhood of the person who's pregnant. It's frustrating that feminism is so often treated as done deal to dismiss when it's just getting started with so much yet to do.

So here's the thing. All of these are true: 1. Limit your UPF consumption because most UPFs are crap. 2. It's not the processing that makes them crap. It's the garden-variety stuff like sugar, fat, and calories that make them crap. 3. Research on UPFs is also crap. Thanks for listening.

Time to ponder the sheer evil madness of capitalism #socialistsunday
Under capitalism it's normal to let children go hungry, let banks force people out of their homes, let sick people die for lack of access to healthcare. But the idea that billionaires could just be less rich - not poor, not struggling, just less rich, is considered insane.
