Great! 😍 Meanwhile, NYS is far behind - and falling further and further back under Hochul. To give one example: she has no discernible plan for any big, new upstate => downstate electricity transmission. That’s desperately needed to cut electricity bills and reduce pollution!

The big new clean energy transmission project, CHPE, is delivering 1,108 megawatts of electricity into NYC’s grid right now. 20% of the grid! 🎉 ✅ lower prices ✅ less pollution ✅ good jobs Big problem, tho: Hochul has no plan for another big, new upstate => downstate project. She should!

The Green NGO movement is not a monolith. But my informed sense is that most folks are alarmed by the permitting deal. So let me say this respectfully, gently, but firmly to my beloved comrades: political access is not political power.
Josh Siegel: "I later called another speaker on the call, Erik Schlenker-Goodrich, executive director of the Western Environmental Law Center, who explained the divide among greens this way: 'The elephant in the room is Sens. Heinrich and Whitehouse are perceived to be champions of environmental issues, and a lot of the large environmental groups are reluctant to push back for well-intentioned reasons to maintain relationships with them."

Could people please stay within reality as the permitting battle unfolds??? Environmental groups have been THE key force for clean energy policy at the fed, state & local levels for decades. At least equal to the clean energy industry itself (which is weak in politics). Sheesh! 🧵

The politics and policy of permitting reform are pretty easy to me. If the oil and gas companies are super for it, I’m super against it. No, I don’t think “we” have outfoxed them and gotten them to enthusiastically support something that is actually bad for them. Here’s API’s top marketing person.

Bill de Blasio campaigned less on climate/jobs in his seminal ‘13 run for Mayor than Zohran in ‘25. Yet over time a lot of us made de Blasio BY FAR the top mayor on it. Local Laws 97 & 154, plus pension fund divestment. BDB was down to it, ideologically. 👍 I hope Mandani goes big! 🧵

I’m old enough to remember when the msm wouldn’t treat politicians raising enormous amount of funding from special interests for a campaign as an admirable feat, a “record-shattering war chest.” They used to cast this as bad. Now they attach positive descriptors. Another sign of social decline.

This might be an unpleasant thing to say out loud but there is no way this deal isn’t good for oil & gas companies. I know that b/c the republicans agreed to it. Therefore, it’ll be more pollution and higher profits at our expense. As I see it, it’s really that simple. Say NO!

🤔 At the moment, Mamdani is not taking big shots on climate/jobs. Nor is he taking the (small/med) shots he said he would. NYC is a global leader on climate/jobs action b/c of Local Laws 97, 154 & divestment. Policies he inherited. So far Zohran isn’t furthering the city’s leadership. He should!🧵

Unsurprisingly @petesikora.bsky.social nails it.
But Co-ops and Condos United has deeper ties to the real estate industry than its grassroots branding suggests. The group is a rebranding of Homeowners for a Stronger New York, a prominent critic of Local Law 97. Until its renaming last fall, Homeowners for a Stronger New York received all its funding (over $750,000) from a lobbying group run by the Real Estate Board of New York, or REBNY, which represents some of the city’s largest developers.

Pete Sikora, the director of climate advocacy at New York Communities for Change, said he believes REBNY is using CCU as political cover in its campaign against Local Law 97.

“Everyone hates billionaire landlords,” said Sikora, “so the landlord lobby pays for front groups to try and shift the focus from them to more sympathetic homeowners.”
