Two prisoners in a cell. The big one says, "I Killed a man and you?". The small one responds "I let my kid drive an ebike around the pedestrianized high street". Appalled, the big prisoner moves to the far end of the bench.

Bottom half of a manuscript page where we can see a drum player and an odd-looking stag.A close-up on the stag reveals that it's a man-made costume: the two hind legs are human feet, the fore legs are a cane or crutch, and a human face can be seen peering out through the fur of the chest

Oh great, British education policy since 1944 has been organised around the Myth of the Metals.
This harks back to some of the worst chapters in British education policy. I’m reminded of what Toby Weaver, who was a senior civil servant at the Department of Education from 1946 until 1973, said disparagingly of the 1944 Act (which created grammar schools, secondary moderns and technical colleges) and the thinking that pervaded the DfE at the time:

There was a general belief, I believe totally false, that children were divided into three kinds. It was sort of Platonic. There were golden children, and silver children, and iron children. The golden children were capable of going to a grammar school, they had minds, they could have abstract thinking. The technical children, the silver children so to speak, were technically orientated, and all the rest, they couldn’t handle ideas, they had to have concrete notions.

Last week, about a third of the History department were able to gather together on graduation day. Rather than lend our intellectual authority to the official procession and ceremony we invited our students to come and celebrate their achievements with us in a shady courtyard. They came. 1/
A group of world leading historians in their finery, some in gowns, stand together under a tree. Some carry signs saying 'Historian at risk', other raise a glass to the camera.
