As I say in the linked piece (non-white) "immigration is Communist infiltration" was also a unifying message for the white power movement. That coding creates camouflage for the far right within mainstream conservatism. It's wild that it outlasted fusionism.

rape is not and never has been about sexual desire it is a tool to make it unsafe for women to be in public, move freely, and be dependent on male “protectors” (Men are not protectors, they are territorial. The only actual protection they provide is for other men, from accountability.)

this is so bleak, actually imagine being called a slur for a group you don't even belong to and instead of going "wow holy shit, no one should have to put up with that, we need to hold people to account," you go "no guys it's okay I hate them too!!!" and just hand the bully your lunch money

I'm just gonna bookmark this for future reference when Dem pundits complain about how the party has trouble communicating its message to voters. The reason you keep running into trouble with your branding isn't campus radicals. The reason is that your opponents purchased all the media outlets.

republicans lay traps for democrats, tricking them into throwing their own voters under the bus to appease the bigotry of people who will never vote for them, and despite seeing how it plays out over-and-over, they race to do it every time

You know, I have this thing I keep saying about the word "racism," and how on the right in particular, it's not a word that has any real substantive meaning. It's just a word that is taken to signify "bad" somehow So people will say "I'm not a racist, I just think black people are inferior"

This and the Interview With The Vampire/Vampire Lestat show hit a similar "I'm interested in this reworking of a familiar tale" place for me. I wish a certain disastrous Discworld adaptation had been more in this vein.

Watching the denouement and destruction scenes now. It's obvious that as transformed a version as this is, it was made by someone who loved the source material and I think he's using concepts from more recent King books that I haven't read.

Also worth noting that there are other solutions for this, many of which are private, and Meta’s solution here will pass zero of the HIPAA/GDPR requirements to ever possibly be recommended in any clinical setting. Plus get you beat up

While I acknowledge the utility of the glasses in this one case, the idea of looping in Meta is a nightmare. I absolutely despise when companies accessibility-wash themselves, and it’s galling to have to suck it up and take their money or watch the field die.

The "book" is a pretty tight novella padded with appendixes, so it fits nicely into a movie.

I'm on episode 7 of 8 now. So literally a whole movie length to go. If you've read the book you know there's not 8 hours of story in it and won't be surprised that Mike Flanagan's telling his own stories around a version of the source story.

The TV movie version with Angela Bettis is probably my favorite, she really captures the brittle fragility. It was a backdoor pilot that wasn't picked up, I wish it had been - the Dead Zone series was fairly enjoyable.

I watched half of this yesterday and I'm watching the rest today. It's definitely Mike Flanagan's Carrie rather than Stephen King's. That's fine when there are already three adaptations that are varying degrees of more faithful.

The argument has been made that this unethical study is “just following the standard of care in G-B”. But the research team HAS the vaccine and the ability to administer the birth dose. We know what will happen when they withhold it. Infants will be infected with Hepatitis B.

When the story first broke on the unethical experiment on infants in Guinea-Bissau, which will withhold the birth dose of HepB vaccine, a reporter asked me if I thought any IRB would approve it. I said “maybe”, because I feared that embedded racism might lead to an approval. And now it’s back on.

It’s simply unimaginable that CDC Director Dr. Erica Schwartz has just bowed to RFK Jr. and approved funding for an utterly unethical clinical trial that will withhold the birth dose of HepB vaccine in Guinea Bissau. It is to be conducted by researchers accused of academic misconduct.
