the New York Times leadership literally thinks they're the most important thing in the world. they hated Biden because he preferred talking to a security guard than to them. they hate Mamdani because he's not performing the obligatory genuflections + he beat their preferred groper.

American voters regardless of partisan affiliation have been quite isolationist for most of American history, it’s just elites postured towards the voters and actually acted the other way (Obama bashing NAFTA but negotiating the TPP), but eventually voters figured out what was going on.

There really is something special about what Zohran and Brad are showing the rest of the world what it still means to be a New Yorker and an American. A Jew and a Muslim modeling a politics of mutual respect, rejecting cynicism. Human decency has been taking a beating but she's not out just yet!

the thing is too that much of this land is neither reasonably arable nor proximal to an agglomerative center which would justify development. they’re selling it off for no reason whatsoever. it’s a war against nature simply because they can.

I don't like that my first thought whenever something goes wrong with the world is "everyone in this country deserves to suffer". I should probably get that checked with a psychiatrist.

For 59 days, Mount St. Helens has rumbled and reshaped. But tonight, it sleeps. As the calendar turns from Saturday to Sunday, there’s no reason to believe May 18 will be different.

May 18 | Morning | #MSH45 The rising sun bathes Mount St. Helens in soft light. Some are awake, such as photographer Gary Rosenquist at Bear Meadow. At Coldwater II, David Johnston radios Bob Christensen back in Vancouver, reporting clear skies, brisk air, and no sign of sulfur gas.

#MSH45 | 8:25 a.m. The mountain has given signs for weeks. At this moment, it holds steady. But not for long.
Aerial view of Mount St. Helens taken the morning of May 18, 1980, by Keith and Dorothy Stoffel. The image looks north across the summit, showing the volcano’s fractured and snow-dusted slopes. Deep channels and debris patterns are visible along the flanks. The scene is calm, with layered ridges fading into the background under soft morning light. Captured shortly before the eruption.

#MSH45 | 8:32 a.m. The ground shudders. A M5.1 quake hits beneath Mount St. Helens. The bulge collapses outward. Within seconds, a lateral blast surges through the disintegrating slope. 7 miles north, Gerry Martin describes what he sees—until the radio goes silent.

#MSH45 | Charlie’s Story Those who can escape have seconds. No time to wait. Just 8 miles west of the summit, Charlie McNerney and John Smart race from their campsite on the North Fork Toutle. They barrel down logging roads and Spirit Lake Highway— the closest known survivors on the north side.

The first thing noticed after the blast passed: silence. Then—ash, everywhere. When the cloud lifts, observers see it: The summit is gone. A mile-wide crater gapes where the peak once stood.
Photograph taken by Spellia Hill at 8:39 a.m. on May 18, 1980—seven minutes after the eruption of Mount St. Helens began. Viewed from a cleared logging area, the ash plume is seen rising over distant ridges. The foreground contains broken tree limbs and scattered debris. A wide, layered cloud arcs across the bright blue sky above the eruption column.

#MSH45 | The Blast Let's back up for a moment. 3.3 billion cubic yards of rock and ice crashing downslope, the landslide buries the North Fork Toutle Valley in debris up to 600 feet deep. Behind it, A turbulent cloud of ash, pumice, superheated gas, and pulverized rock.
Photograph by Keith Ronnholm showing the initial blast of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980. A dense, dark gray ash plume erupts from the volcano’s north flank, billowing upward and outward. The foreground is lined with evergreen trees and a flat ridgeline, with a clear view of the mountain’s collapse and early lateral explosion.Second photo by Keith Ronnholm capturing the growing eruption plume. A massive, light-gray ash cloud has expanded across the sky, dwarfing the volcano and the surrounding forest. The plume appears to boil and churn, filled with texture and force. Trees in the foreground remain undisturbed—for now.Close-up photo of the advancing pyroclastic surge taken by Keith Ronnholm. Dense lobes of ash, rock, and superheated gas cascade down the slopes of Mount St. Helens, filling the valley with towering, cauliflower-shaped clouds. A large fir tree frames the left side of the image, underscoring how close the blast is.Photograph by Keith Ronnholm capturing the ash cloud as it overtakes the landscape. The bottom of the frame is filled with bulbous, gray pyroclastic material; above it, a dark, turbulent sky swirls with ash and debris. Tree tops in the foreground appear small against the immensity of the blast.
