A Tibetan activist lit himself on fire and outside of the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday to protest China’s control over his homeland, declaring in a video before his self-immolation that Beijing’s policies were “destroying the Tibetan people.” He later died.

I'll discuss this book in a little more depth - I found it thought provoking in a number of ways, as a piece of military history (the tactical details and challenges of command that peacekeeping presents are fascinating), certain political questions it poses, and some worryingly relevant details.

honestly I think the best metaphor for this debacle is the Russo-Japanese war: -idiot ruler with delusions of grandeur -empire wants to show a middle power whos in charge -negotiators are idiots -imperial logistics are all fucked up -empire surrenders to middle power after defeat

Without a trace of irony, this would be a policy worth reviving through modern security force assistance, political partnerships etc. with East and West African states, particularly given the steady growth of JNIM and ISWAP. There are some efforts already, but they’re due for expansion.

Good thread weaving a few things together. I think people really don't get how low the baseline is. Let's say you want to get something to Arviat. I've picked Arviat as easy mode. It's the southernmost community in Nunavut so closest to existing infrastructure. It's also on the mainland, easy mode.

Good piece, but one thing the Iran War has demonstrated is that fossil fuels aren’t just about energy: fertilizer, helium, feedstock for plastics, and other goods vital for daily life have been affected. We need to get those to market somehow, and there’s a role for Canada as most moral supplier.
