Only seeds that restore the parental chromosome combination are viable, giving clone-like offspring #meiosis4eva #SexualReproduction www.nature.com/articles/d41...

We are now establishing a transformation protocol for it, so we will attempt to restore recombination by bringing a functional copy of SHOC1, which is silenced in R. tenuis

Good question! Well we haven’t been able to detect a single crossover across at least five different accessions across different localities of Brazil. We also see early signatures of genome divergence in R. tenuis consistent with predictions from Meselson effect. So I am quite sure there is no CO.

A scientific illustration showing the life cycle of a plant Rhynchospora tenuis.

Figure caption:
Schematic representation of the R. tenuis life cycle (2n = 4). Both male and female meiosis proceed without crossovers (achiasmatic inverted meiosis). Male gametogenesis is asymmetric, yielding a single functional sperm nucleus and non-Mendelian segregation. Fertilization restores the diploid state with intact haplotypes, but only heterozygous seeds develop into viable embryos, ensuring faithful restoration of the highly heterozygous parental genome each generation.

Fig. 5: Life cycle of R. tenuis (PECP-48 genotype) under achiasmatic meiosis.
