Liliana M. Dávalos gave a talk at the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution Conference on the evolution of recent autosomal translocations to the X chromosome in iconic Neotropical bats.

Liliana Dávalos presented a talk on behalf of her postdoc, Alexis Brown, at the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution conference exploring genetic overlaps between bats and belugas. Their work demonstrates how comparative genomics reveals convergent anti-deafness adaptations in echolocating cetaceans and bats.

Kristen Rayfield gave a talk at the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution Conference on California sea lion microbiomes. Her work demonstrates how dental calculus (fossilized plaque) from museum specimens can be used to study ecological transitions and the introduction of human-associated pathogens into a population heavily shaped by human activity.

Brenda Delamonica presented a poster at the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution conference on the APOBEC3 Z-domain gene family across 103 bat species. Her research demonstrates how gene subtype specificity and evolutionary history, rather than total gene copy count, shape viral tolerance and immunity in bats.
