Burnham’s speech is the best from a British politician in yrs. He’s the first leader with policies that I can truly get behind in over a decade. He actually said everything I wish Starmer had said months ago, as per my article below. The similarities are uncanny!!!🧵 bylinetimes.com/2026/05/12/t...

Lest anyone accuse me of bargaining in bad faith here, let me start with this admission: I don't think AI is intelligent; nor do I think that the current (admittedly impressive) statistical techniques will lead to intelligence. 1/
A killer 1940s robot zapping two large domes with eye-lasers; trapped under the domes are two children, taken from 1910s photos of child laborers; one, a little girl in a straw hat, is holding two heavy buckets. The other, a newsie with a shoulder bag, is picking his nose. The background is the collapsing pillars seen in Dore's engraving of The Death of Solomon.

This will have to stand for all the times MM marked Dawkins' card, and for that it does nicely. (that is, one day, I'll post something equally pithy of hers, but not today)
The first paragraphs of the magnificent Gene-Juggling (1979) by the magnificent Mary Midgley: Genes cannot be selfish or unselfish, any more than atoms can be jealous,
elephants abstract or biscuits teleological. This should not need mentioning,
but Richard Dawkins's book The Selfish Gene has succeeded in confusing
a number of people about it, including Mr J. L. Mackie.1 What Mackie
welcomes in Dawkins is a new, biological-looking kind of support for
philosophic egoism. If this support came from Dawkins's producing
important new facts, or good new interpretations of old facts, about animal
life, this could be very interesting. Dawkins, however, simply has a weak-
ness for the old game of Brocken-spectre moralizing—the one where the
player strikes attitudes on a peak at sunrise, gazes awe-struck at his gigantic
shadow on the clouds, and reports his observations as cosmic truths

publiccomment.blog/p/hyperfascism
I would like to suggest that Trumpism is best understood as a species of what I’m going to call hyperfascism. By “hyperfascism,” I don’t mean “superfascism” or anything like that. Instead, I’m using the hyper- prefix in a way similar to how Baudrillard deploys it in his definition of hyperreality as a sort of representation that is more “real” than whatever it was originally meant to represent. (He uses Disneyland as an example of the paradigmatic hyperreal space.) I’m also influenced by Anton Jäger’s suggestion that “hyperpolitics”—or constant and frenetic political activity in the absence of any structures that might convert this activity into real institutional change—is the dominant political register in 21st-century Western democracies.

So what is hyperfascism? It is hyperreal, hyperpolitical fascism. It’s a dramatic reenactment of totalitarian domination in a time and place where the infrastructure for real totalitarianism is nowhere to be found. It’s the signs and symbols of fascism detached from the machinery of the Nazi war economy or the large-scale, organized street violence of the Italian blackshirts.

Make no mistake: hyperfascism is still fascism. But it is a shallow sort of fascism, obsessed with outward appearances and completely uninterested in everything else. It is as if the architects of the Trump regime had cribbed their entire governing agenda from cheap cyberpunk thrillers about fascist dystopias. They certainly haven’t given much thought to how authoritarian regimes consolidate popular consent; in fact, they’re acting like the 2024 election represented the end of politics, and therefore the end of any need on their part to modulate their behavior in order to ensure regime stability.

We are not the same.
It's wild to me how everyone has
roughly the same "world is ending"
feeling right now but some people
feel that way because of fascism and
climate change while others feel that
way, with equal intensity, because of
drag queens at libraries and singular
they/them pronouns.

Everyone knows that things aren't working
anymore, it's just that if you have a scientific
materialist understanding of the world you
can actually know *why* it's not working,
whereas if you have a demon-haunted view
of the world, your impulse is going to be
to try to sacrifice someone to appease the
gods.

Crises precipitate change. That's no reason to induce a crisis, but you'd be a fool to let a crisis go to waste. Donald Trump is the greatest crisis of our young century, and the EU looks set to squander the opportunity, to its own terrible detriment. 1/
