so, in case you missed it, I have a growing collection of #dnd 3.5 house rules titled Flea Market #GFM and i posted a big-picture list of what's different so far I also decided to only post pdf's (converted from markdown, so don't expect them to look too good) on itch geyik.itch.io/flea-market-...

A Quick Look At Changes
Hey there, if this is your first time here: I love d&d3.5 but have some issues with how character building becomes its own "deck builder game" how magicians are a bit too versatile for game's own good...

Judging by the increasing number of AI RPGs, it's only a matter of time before some AI YouTube channel pops up that reviews AI RPGs to an audience of AI chatbots. Just a swirling chaos of inhuman minds like dreaming Azathoth, its slumber serenaded by AI melodies. There might already be one.

another #dnd question: renaming Rogue to ... what? Delver? Explorer? every PC does those at times, so probably not. actually i feel like what a Rogue does is "Door Opener," both literal and metaphorical, but i fear metaphorical part would get lost on players. also, that's a terrible class name.

This thread also illustrates why I think it’s harder to design your own PbtA game than your own Fate game. You *can’t* wing the moves. (Which only makes sense as Fate is a generic game engine and PbtA is a design philosophy, at its core)

Formal affordances are the elements that pull a player toward certain actions, they “cry out” for the player to take those actions. Material affordances are the actions a system actually allows the player to take. Agency occurs when the two are in balance. (Mateas 2001)

Panel 2: another bedbug excitedly bursts through the front door and exclaims, “someone invented beds!” Panel 3: one of the bedbugs looks over their shoulder at the other and says, “you’re joking”

Given Wizards' abandonment of D&D fiction, it's great to see Hachette Partworks bringing back 100 classic D&D novels—even better, all in a gorgeous HARDCOVER format. If they were more easily available in the US, I suspect I'd be looking for shelving to fit 100 books. 🧵1

Thinking about some #ttrpg #design (again): #dnd 3’s maneuvers (like disarm, trip etc) implement a “+4 per size difference” rule. Sounds reasonable, until you realize that they also have an implicit “bigger size = higher STR” rule as well. in the end we end up double counting for size differences.

The foot in the door
four frame comic. each frame has the text on top in white. first frame shows jk rowling. second frame shows trump and erdogan in suits doing thumbs up. third shows the istanbul landscape. fourth shows Talarico giving a speech in front of the podium. text reads:
"protecting the children"
has become the foot in the
door of fascism.
last weekend (sept. 12th-13th),
under the pretense of "protecting
the children," trump's turkish
bestie erdogan led a massive
anti-lgbtq crackdown.
in an extraordinary esca-
lation, legal proceedings were
announced against 160 people.
about 50 activists have been
arrested. associations and
homes have been ransacked
across the country.
so when we hear people who
are supposedly our allies use
the same language as erdogan,
we owe it to our turkish
siblings to call it out.

I made this design in 2019, and it’s been ripped off by countless creepy little Temu shops, as well as by Shein. Seeing it in an AI ad is ruining my day, ngl. If you like it, buy one from me - link in bio. I actually give money to queer mutual aid and medical care groups.

reminds me of a design idea i had: PCs' intelligence stat determined how many sheets of paper you could use as your character sheet, with the rulebook giving "sheet modules" for you to use. a mage that slings only fire cantrip can do with a low INT, a fighter with gazillion maneuvers needs high INT

#indie #ttrpg #magic #design 1) barbarians of lemuria: there is no spell list, just a vague notion of a “spell power” and some requirements to fulfill. Most variables are left to the GM. 2) my #BTaS has lists of spells each tied to a skill. There are “mana” points and you may “die” at 0 mana.

a comic strip. The first panel shows a goblin in a long coat approaching a guard. The second panel has the goblin saying "we're just normal men!". The third panel has the guard replying "what do you mean normal men?". The fourth panel shows both the goblin in the coat and the guard. The coat is beginning to open to show many goblins within. The guard looks suspicious and a goblin emerging from the coat is saying "We're just innocent men!"

Great thread on the opening of YA. I can't think of a book where we nailed what we wanted to do as well from the off. The only downside is that I'm not sure we ever bettered it later. Still - to some, this opening says nothing, to others, it leaves nothing to be said. It seems this is Larkin week.
