You can be judgemental/critical! We don’t have to accept every moral outlook that people come up with. For example, I judge those people for reserving the term “rationalist” for themselves. Like we’re just irrational not agreeing with them?

it's kind of surreal that the most and least inherently likeable people on the internet are in some kind of feud. tolkein could not comprehend the sheer level of obvious good and evil

so, in case you missed it, I have a growing collection of #dnd 3.5 house rules titled Flea Market #GFM and i posted a big-picture list of what's different so far I also decided to only post pdf's (converted from markdown, so don't expect them to look too good) on itch geyik.itch.io/flea-market-...

A Quick Look At Changes
Hey there, if this is your first time here: I love d&d3.5 but have some issues with how character building becomes its own "deck builder game" how magicians are a bit too versatile for game's own good...

Judging by the increasing number of AI RPGs, it's only a matter of time before some AI YouTube channel pops up that reviews AI RPGs to an audience of AI chatbots. Just a swirling chaos of inhuman minds like dreaming Azathoth, its slumber serenaded by AI melodies. There might already be one.

another #dnd question: renaming Rogue to ... what? Delver? Explorer? every PC does those at times, so probably not. actually i feel like what a Rogue does is "Door Opener," both literal and metaphorical, but i fear metaphorical part would get lost on players. also, that's a terrible class name.

This thread also illustrates why I think it’s harder to design your own PbtA game than your own Fate game. You *can’t* wing the moves. (Which only makes sense as Fate is a generic game engine and PbtA is a design philosophy, at its core)

so you're around (2) and would enjoy d&d 3 style physical combat maneuvers? of course there's also a question of "what do martials do out of combat", which i'm also struggling with

agreed, that's why i actually recommend rules-heavy games to *new* GMs/players and -lite games to experienced players. still, comparing weapon sizes against each other to determine attack/defense bonuses is a bit too much for me (looking at you, modiphius' 2d20 conan!)

as bluesky's resident BoL enjoyer: yes, rules wise it's on the lighter side, but allows more PC customization than some other old-school games. (there are some very rules-heavy Conan games and i think they miss the point of an action game)

Formal affordances are the elements that pull a player toward certain actions, they “cry out” for the player to take those actions. Material affordances are the actions a system actually allows the player to take. Agency occurs when the two are in balance. (Mateas 2001)

Given Wizards' abandonment of D&D fiction, it's great to see Hachette Partworks bringing back 100 classic D&D novels—even better, all in a gorgeous HARDCOVER format. If they were more easily available in the US, I suspect I'd be looking for shelving to fit 100 books. 🧵1

my beloved skill systems: * granular * has room PC for improvement * (sometimes) independent from combat (what i mean is, e.g. Str affects Str checks, and also your damage in ability-based systems) also i’m not a huge OSR gamer, despite our two modules 😁

I prefer crunchy games, so a rules lawyer, aka. someone who reads the damn book, is always welcome at my games. Depending on table, I can wear different hats. Usually in con games I’m “the roleplayer” as others kill the vibe fast.

Yet another reason to appreciate #pathfinder 2e, best version of (some version of) d&d. I really should start a new campaign.

(For the record, did anyone use the “XP penalty for uneven levels” rule ever?) My 3e Flea Market limits multiclassing to any class+racial favored class only, but still no solution to barbarian/fighter. I thought you also could combo any two classes in 13A, am i remembering it wrong?

Oh, interesting. What’re your issues with multiclassing? (mine is how unrestricted it is. Then again, my design philosophy is “less is more” these days) And yes, PrC are great … as a GM tool! I think it was a mistake to make them so player-facing, in retrospect

since we're talking about radical changes to d&d, how about this? core classes that do not go all the way to 20: if you take those and you're playing a long game, you have to multiclass later in your career. #ttrpg #design #dnd

Yes dynamic gameplay is hard to track manually, guess there’s no choice but walk the tightrope of ease of play versus fun/tactical play

Curious if you had a chance to check Pathfinder 2e. They made me accept “+level to checks” that i was vehemently against in d&d4e. Rogues there fill a role i call “martial support”, rather than glass cannons.

i'm currently doing something similar. i realized two things: 1. rogue's power depends on how highly someone values skills 2. features are stronger than feats, so fighter's feats aren't enough to compete. there have so many of them, but a) they don't scale b) there aren't enough *high level* feats

My worry is not “players controlling PC death” but *just one* player controlling theirs. I would feel like a 2nd class player at the table. [that’s where testing comes into play]

The more you talk about it, the more PbtA it feels, with one class/playbook having this feature. Alternatively, we can look at Blades in the Dark to reach “the faction/guild as an (immortal) character” so different parties are tied to each other through it

Once again we’re quite aligned. In my “new 3e” i’m reducing slots (still more than yours) and will nerf spells at some point. My idea is “3 slots=1 feature” and then I try to balance classes around total features, giving more bonus feats where necessary.

question for #dnd players/GMs: why do you think ability increasing magic items increase to an odd number? is WotC just being cute? or is there a hidden rule interaction? #ttrpg #design

Hey, you know me, I love comprehensive GM guides. I just don’t feel good about the two issues I brought forth. But maybe they’re non-issues, so you should test it and see how it goes: “for today’s session, one of you is immortal (*not* invincible!) so who is it?”
010
geyik @ali.daelightstudios.com · 22/09/2026
I mean, I guess I like to keep my mechanical and narrative tools separate as much as I can, and the motivations you described sounded very narrative and very “GM guide” flavored.

I just find the disconnect between plot-armored and -unarmored PCs weird 🤓 a global & PC-facing “die or pay a cost”* is what i went for, inspired by Daggerheart (which is inspired by a number of PbtA games, incl. Dungeon World) (* except Sanity loss, which has a chance of outright “killing” the PC)

geyik @ali.daelightstudios.com · 22/09/2026
Sorry, i don’t like this implementation. 1. How do you choose who gets it? 2. That buff becomes meaningless if they aren’t in deadly peril (default state a character wants to be) Why not make it a global rule? Do you *want* a game with regular new characters?

geyik @ali.daelightstudios.com · 21/09/2026
oh no, i just realized same bonuses are given to Str checks to break objects. a Colossal creature already has +11 Str on average, why do they need +16 further? maybe we could just say "a minimum bonus"
