One reason there should be a revival of physical media is because it used to be possible to give people movies as gifts. You used to be able to hand someone Matango: Attack of the Mushroom People on DVD and then they'd watch it. You can't do that anymore and it sucks.

More people should watch Matango in general

BTW, for anyone interested... someone posted a rare high-res version of Matango on the Internet Archive. All you'd have to do is download it, download the subtitle for it in the comments, add the srt onto the video, and voila, you too can watch the very random but not bad movie I referenced earlier!

I loved gifting people Meet The Feebles or whatever deranged films I found in the video store clearance box.

Also, with purely digital media, we don't own anything. Netflix can remove movies, Kindle remove books, etc. The books and movies that are on my shelf are actually mine.

You haven't considered the joy of handing someone a USB drive with masking tape misspelling the name of the movie, though

El Gato Astronomico @astrocat.bsky.social · 01/08/2024

Yeah and I've noticed that when I talk about a movie with someone else or they tell me about a movie, we're much less likely to watch it ourselves later on streaming

You can still give someone the gift of physical media….. as long as it’s Yellowstone season 3. You lose money if you don’t also buy the Official Yellowstone cookware set.

Thrift stores are littered with CDs and DVDs (and even CD/DVD players). Most places for $1 or $2. It is the golden age of buying that shit.

Excellent post! People used to like to gift silly movies and then everyone would have a party to watch them. An early example was that all-time classic, "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes." 🍿

Books too. While I do download ebooks occasionally, esp from the library, one of the reasons I I like to buy “real books” is so I can pass them along to others. And you can’t get ebooks at used bookstores.

Same with music. I remember my friend gave me a purple Dandy Warhols 7” for my birthday (25 yrs ago). Still have it. That piece of physical media—like many objects—carries a story.

Throw the video file onto a thumb drive. Most TVs can play MP4 and several other video formats directly.

It is still possible and I do it at every holiday and birthday. You have to make an effort. It requires mail order if you don’t have an intrepid local shop. Physical media is still popular and common. Just because it isn’t in every convenience shop or big-box store doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

For years I’ve hosted a Novemberween party (Halloween never seems to be on a weekend, so I pick my own date). I celebrate with friends by getting random terrible movies through the year, gift wrapping them, then making the guests pick what we’re watching. Then we have to sit through it. It’s great.

That’s a great movie and a fan of Japanese sci-fi movies such as myself would have greatly appreciated such a gift. I still buy physical media myself, although I stopped giving it as gifts a few years back when a friend told me he no longer had a DVD player. Always have a DVD/Blu Ray player, kids!

I still buy them and have over 1000 CDs and a lot of DVD and Blu-ray. I get so sad at Xmas that none of my family thinks to get me any. Like they could save loads of money, buy me a cheap album and I would be ecstatic for new music

It remains super weird to me that Amazon doesn’t allow you to buy a film, book or tv series for someone that will show up in their account. This seems insanely easy to do, any reasons why we can’t?

Finsox @finsox.bsky.social · 01/08/2024

I disagree with the return of physical but I think there should be a return to universal format. Like I buy you a digital movie, I know you can just play it via whatever software/service you like. When you bought someone a DVD, you knew they could play it on their DVD player. That's the difference.
