Tears brought on by the alphabetical order commute playlist this morning: "Peace, Love, and Understanding." Acoustic duet by Elvis and Nick Lowe. "Where is the haaaaaarrrrmony?" sung in harmony. Perfect in every way. It was the walk-up music at our wedding, so it will always bring me back there.

Jesus Christ Cornell
What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.

Of course, when I got home I had to make a Copper Blue. 😁 #Cheers 🍸
A brown cocktail in an etched Nick and Nora glass, garnished with three blueberries on a metal cocktail pick. The ingredient bottles are out of focus in the background.

COPPER BLUE
2 oz rye whiskey
1/2 oz Amaro Pasubio (Alpine blueberry bitter)*
1/2 oz sweet vermouth
2 dashes peach bitters (sub citrus bitters if you don’t have peach)

Stir & strain, garnish with three large blueberries on a pick.

(* There’s really no substitute for this; if you can’t find it you can’t make this drink)

I’ve been a media witness to two federal executions. One was Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh. The other, a week later, was a drug kingpin named Juan Raul Garza. My conclusion after watching both men die: The death penalty should not exist. Period. It fixes nothing, and it erodes our souls.

The death penalty is a moral abomination. State-sanctioned barbarism pushed by incompetent morons and sanctioned by the Supreme Court. Absolute ghoul shit. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
The lone woman on Tennessee's death row was still alive after she was administered two lethal injections, her lawyer said in a motion seeking to halt her execution Wednesday night, a stunning development after the Supreme Court had stepped in to allow the state to put her to death.
At 8:26 p.m. local time, witnesses said
"executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," her lawyers said in a federal court filing.
They said Pike "has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat," and that curtains to the death chamber "have gone down twice."

Christa Pike was 18yrs old at the time of the murder. She never knew safety or unconditional love. Instead she was sexually abused from the time she was a toddler. She’s been incarcerated for 30 years but even that’s not enough to satisfy the bloodlust, we have to murder her too. Shameful.
