they COULD design their app to make it actually serve the customer, with an easy “reorder” button that would duplicate the order exactly without error it would be: 1. utterly reliable 2. faster 3. cheaper so much “ai” is a sloppy patch for learned helplessness at the corporate level

reading this blog post is making me sad because it's calling out all the ways in which art and research are very much the same, and therefore how the moneyed interests are tearing us apart.

This particular kind of applied AI research is beautiful to me, and why I fell in love with research. You start with an impossible problem, and laughably few resources, and then you ask: how clever can I get with this? And there are so many directions to explore. You might invent a better algorithm that takes advantage of the structures of the problem to chop away huge quantities of unnecessary work. You might discover a way of estimating parts of the answers that are always inaccurate but consistent enough to be useful. You might learn something interesting about the way humans solve the same problem, and figure out how to incorporate it into your solution. You will never get the right answer. That's not what you're here to do. You're here to squeeze every drop out of the knowledge, techniques and insight that you have around you, and to see what new things you can force out of what you already have.

I am done with this shit. It is over. The state of engineering right now is horrible. It has been half a month since I started a new role at a big company.
Nobody knows anything here. The specs, code, tests, PRDs, tickets, resolution of those tickets, reports, etc., everything is made by Claude Code.
Nobody on my team likes this. They are being forced to ship as much as they can. I have heard multiple times from higher management that pushing code is not a bottleneck, so why are we slow?
