Think about the type of person who would actually want to be an executioner. Not just someone who supports the death penalty in the abstract but who is so depraved that they are genuinely willing to kill people while believing that they are righteous for doing it.

I feel like part of what's going on with "AI" products is that tech people heard the user research phrase "you are not your users" and have taken it not as a call for epistemic humility, but rather as an injustice that they need to correct at all costs

Like seriously, this is such a clear example of what many people (such as Drs. Emily Bender and Alex Hanna and Timnit Gebru) have been saying about how we don't need to wait for new committees or regulations. Extortion is already illegal

I too have been guilty of saying that tech people should be more conversant in the humanities, but I also realize that the problem with that is they just get better at hiding their theft and exploitation beneath a veneer of social justice language

Something I haven’t seen really elaborated on in the discourse of Effective Altruists taking over everything from the AI industry to US national tech policy is that this produces a deeply insular intellectual monoculture that is dominant but isolated from other non EA-ist intellectual thought.

Microsoft's data center subcontractor in New Jersey illegally runs a bunch of gas "backup" generators on site, figuring they won't get caught or will just eat the wrist-slap fines if they do. Regulatory enforcement is so bad that a third party had to take drone images to get the state to act.
