Spent a chunk of the day reading legal codes and history books about all the ways state and local governments tried to stop enslaved and free Black people from learning to read and write. I might have to skip my "The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America Since 1945" night reading.

Big news in the Senate battle. After pouring $30 million in NC, John Thune's GOP SuperPAC stops spending there, effectively conceding Cooper is likely to win. And they're dumping their first 7-figures in Kansas. (Note: a Dem internal found Hamilton up today.) www.semafor.com/article/10/0...

one skepticism i have right now with the sort of AI agents that are supposed to automate regular-person everyday tasks is that most of the info i can think of that might be useful to aggregate is pretty strictly siloed for good reasons (medical stuff, school stuff, financial stuff, etc)

Imagine if we simply left murders by students on college campuses to be punished by colleges, using only the internal punishments they are able to inflict. We would find it insane and intolerable. Rape isn't that far off in terms of severity. Why are we putting utterly unsuited orgs in charge?

Talarico has an immigration plan that in its broad strokes is very humane and pro-immigrant. He says our border should be like a "front porch" with a "lock" and a "welcome mat." Both of those are important. The "welcome mat" in his plan deserves more attention. 4/ newrepublic.com/article/2160...

Something remarkable is happening: James Talarico is running an expansively pro-immigrant campaign in Texas, a state Trump won by 14 points, speaking in Biblical terms about our duty to "the stranger." And it's resonating. That's seismic. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2160...

this is part of why I push so hard on the Tilly Norwood of it all. we are not asking if an “AI actress” can win an Oscar, we are asking if software engineers can win an Oscar for their woman-shaped piece of software and we have to keep redirecting the word choices back to reinforce that

if you want to know what 'Zohran filling potholes' looks like at the federal executive level it's this. little but noticeable steps towards accountability. it doesn't make the structural crises go away, but it makes them a hell of a lot less noticeable and buys you good will.

We could also just let them freely sell their water rights, which effectively isn't allowed. Same result: growing cheap alfalfa stops making sense when someone will pay several times more for the water. Let them have their windfall if that's what it takes. It's literally cheaper to buy them off.

we could solve the western water crisis overnight by simply charging alfalfa farmers market rates for water
Across the basin, alfalfa hay uses more than 5 million acre-feet of Colorado River water — that's 26% of all the water consumed in the basin. One acre-foot roughly equals the annual water use of two or three households.
In the Upper Basin, irrigated agriculture consumes 2.8 million acre-feet, or nearly half the water used by Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, the environment, reservoirs and water exports out of the basin. Cattle-feed crops, like alfalfa, consume 90% of all water used by Upper Basin agriculture.
That means alfalfa uses more water than cities, commercial users and industries across the entire basin:
Collectively, these users consume about 3.5 million acre-feet, or 18%, of the river's water. The Colorado River
