The administration keeps telling us that ICE is in our cities to make us all feel safe, but if they're goons in plainclothes bum rushing vehicles with guns and pounding on the windows, how exactly does that make anyone feel safe?

Something ppl need to realize is that almost everyone in Israel--and a good chunk of Jews outside of Israel--knew someone who was seriously hurt or killed by Hamas during the Oct 7 Massacre. It's like if 9/11 killed multiple orders of magnitude more people per capita.

california has a double whammy here with prop 13 my wife and I bought our house in 2013, and not only is our rate (3.625%) much lower than any new mortgage we could get, our house has ~doubled in value and thus any similar house we bought would double our property taxes we aren't moving

It’s neither a sudden renunciation nor a clear story of any other kind. The public seems evenly distributed in its willingness to tolerate it all, but unresponsive to specific events. This ought to seem weird, I think. Explanations?

I also can’t find an inflection point when Renee Good was murdered, when the boat strikes started, or really anywhere. *Maybe* for Kilmer Abrego Garcia in March ‘25. More plausibly it’s just a slow, gradual disillusionment, not a recoil in horror from anything. (Ugh! I am ashamed of this!)

Can anyone point out on the graph where fuel prices spiked? But then again…
Screenshot from Nate Silver. Trump’s approval numbers have declined steadily throughout his term, not really precipitously at any point unless we count the first few weeks. Even that’s iffy.

You might have heard it: “Americans didn’t turn against Trump when he did [any of the bad stuff]. They ONLY turned against him when fuel prices went up.” This is false. The real picture isn’t necessarily redeeming, but it’s not like that.

The dot com bubble but bigger. Or for an older analogy, railroads. Bubbles bursting did not mean no more internet or no more trains. But it did mean many investments in those sectors going bad, and problems for the larger economy.

Said it before, but: I think an ugly shakeout is inevitable even on very optimistic assumptions about the economic value of "AI" in the abstract. Like, The Internet really was a hugely transformative technology—but a lot of the specific 90s investments in dot-coms still didn't pan out.

This is why neoliberals since the Washington Consensus have understood that free trade is economically good, not just because of comparative advantage, but also because it improves the political economy by removing one avenue for clientelism, forcing companies to instead make better products.

If instead of envisioning a secular rapture, you just begin with the basic assumption that people are born free and work out all the ways we can be free together from there, you’ll very naturally arrive at stunningly elegant solutions like “trans rights” and “freedom of movement.”

if there's a decision value to you for information, the news you read will tend to be closer to that of an industry trade journal, all technical and precise and analytical. if much of what you do is simply consume things you cannot directly act on, what you get becomes narrative

I can’t emphasize this enough — “AI” wasn’t born corrupt and toxic. For ~75 years, it was mathematicians and scientists doing interesting, thoughtful work and trying to solve problems, making only the usual human mistakes. What “AI” did to machine learning is as tragic as what it did to artists.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

If the government has control over you, you need to be able to influence the government; that's the social contract of democracy Fwiw I hold this to be true for non-citizens too. If you live in the US you should be able to vote.

Dug into this and her name seems to be Zhao Jing. She’s being held at Adelanto. A habeas lawsuit was filed at 11:05 AM Pacific today. On X, a user said Ms. Zhao had taught her son. As to why ICE arrested her, no idea. Most likely she’s a pending asylum applicant who got stuck in backlogs for years.

Her name is Zhao Jing, and my heart broke when I heard her shout "Jing Zhao." Because I saw terror, helplessness, and despair on her face, which shattered me. I never imagined I'd see her in such a way. I still have her contact information; I have her email records. She was once my eldest son's early intervention teacher, with extremely fluent English close to native speaker level, and a senior staff member at that institution—a team-leading Supervisor. She's even from the same hometown as me. For someone in her situation, do you have any advice?郑存柱 @cunzhuzheng.2h

Recent Progress:
Last night, a friend of this lady reached out to me, asking for my help. Early this morning, I got in touch with Ms. Zhao by phone. After our conversation, I obtained her specific details. That friend had helped top up her phone credit. Since her father doesn't know how to answer calls from the immigration detention center, I also found a kind-hearted friend to go to her residence, visit her elderly father, and promptly check on his health condition.
I immediately drafted a writ of habeas corpus, handed it to the lawyer for review, and have now uploaded it to the federal court for official filing.
I hope she can redain her freedom soon.

It's also just simple institutional self-defense. Does the power of the purse still hold? Does Congress actually get to govern? And so on. They've got to use all of the levers available to them, and probably create some new ones that aren't yet.

Years ago I interviewed Houston Mayor Annise Parker who told me one of the main reasons the city was able to cut homelessness by so much is she forced all the governments and nonprofits into a room and made them use the same data system. Meanwhile in LA www.latimes.com/california/s...
The agencies use different data systems, and even different Google spreadsheets, to produce their reports and often have different bureaus within them managing different housing programs. For example, a senior director for Bass told the interviewers that the Inside Safe program uses an internal Google spreadsheet to manage its occupancy records and does not have access to the Homeless Management Information System, the countywide database that tracks street contacts with homeless people and housing placements
