the infuriating thing about all of the crises going on right now is that they were completely predictable the second they announced they were gutting food safety monitoring, everyone knew it would lead to a bunch of contamination and recalls! we could have just not done it! it's all so stupid

Wild stuff; the Trump admin appears to be getting ready to claim that Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, shot and killed by ICE on his way to work, had multiple baggies of meth just sitting in plain view on the DASHBOARD for anyone to see. I know the truth is sometimes stranger than fiction, but COME ON.
The shooting has come under heavy scrutiny in Houston and nationally. Residents have called for the names of the ICE agents involved in the encounter to be made public.
And since the shooting July 7, there have been numerous demands for an independent investigation.
Special Agent McNeilly wrote in the application that he "inspected the vehicle and observed in plain view several plastic bags with what appeared to be a white crystal-like substance packaged in small plastic bags."Specifically, the agent said, four bags were visible through the windows, and three bags were seen in the middle of the dashboard.
Another bag was seen on the passenger-side floorboard.
The agent wrote that the packaging was
"consistent with methamphetamine."
The application was signed by Judge
Richard W Bennett, a magistrate judge in the Southern District of Texas.
It was not immediately clear why the van had not been searched earlier, or whether the agents who obtained the search warrant found any drugs inside the van on the day of the shooting. A spokesman for the F.B.I. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A fun aside — MSG, owned by Trump pal James Dolan, tried to tell us that the party wasn’t cancelled because of Trump. And not long after, the NYPD sent an updated statement — yes, it’s cancelled because of the presidential visit. Here are the statements.
Statement from MSG Spokesperson:
"The permit for the Plaza33 Game 3 watch party was denied by the City's permitting office in consultation with the NYPD. However, the White House will confirm that this is not about the President. We understand NYPD Commissioner Tisch is planning additional street closures around Madison Square
Garden."D

Please see updated statement:
"There will be no watch parties outside of Madison Square Garden for Game 3 only. This was done fully in coordination with the Secret Service because of the presidential visit. We expect watch parties at Madison Square Garden to resume for Game 4."

Good, necessary... also blindingly obvious and a bit belated. God I hope Bouie writing it for NYT can help get it through the thick skulls of the oldest, most powerful Democrats though.
You can think of this Trump administration as a similar state of affairs. The American people broke something when they gave Trump a second chance in office. And there is no going back to the Union as it was. If Democrats hope to lead the nation to any kind of recovery, much less renewal, they must understand and internalize this fact of the matter.

Broken eggs cannot be mended. To try to do so, to try to return to some notion of normality is to court failure. Worse, it is to play a repeat of the last Democratic administration when, in pursuit of the familiar, the Democratic Party all but passed the baton back to reactionaries working toward something revolutionary.

Julie K. Brown
A special citation is awarded to Miami Herald reporter Julie K. Brown for her groundbreaking reporting in 2017 and 2018 that exposed Jeffrey Epstein's systematic abuse of young women, the justice system that protected him, and, over time, his powerful network of associates and enablers.
Her Perversion of Justice series, published nearly a decade ago, revealed how prosecutors shielded Epstein from federal sex trafficking charges when he was first accused of abusing young women. She went on to document and give voice to the scores of victims who had been groomed and abused by him and others in his circle. Her work, and the release of the government's Epstein files, continue to reverberate around the world.

However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end.
