A special case of a more general pet theory of mine. kieranhealy.org/blog/archive...
My pet Theory of Professional Academic Associations is that the discipline's organizational life inverts its core intellectual commitments. Thus, Political Science is the discipline of government and especially of democracy. Yet, the last time I checked, all of the high-level positions in APSA are decided by committee deals rather than free and fair elections by the membership. Or, Economics is the discipline of decentralized coordination through the efficient operation of the market. Yet its job "market" is in fact an administered queue, with departments explicitly ranking their candidates, departments effectively ranking themselves, and a direct matching process operating between the two as top-ranking candidates slot into open positions in top-ranked schools. (This mechanism also includes an effective method of rent-extraction from Deans in the form of a salary ratchet.) And, to get to the present case, Sociology is the discipline that analyzes the many forms of collective social action, on the one hand, and is the social science most oriented towards the exposure of the workings of power, on the other. So naturally it follows that the ASA is not very good at organizing anything, and that its financial arrangements are as secretive as legally possible.

wikipedia has been ANNIHILATED with AI bot traffic for a while now (because LLMs can't get enough of it) which puts a huge burden on its tech and server costs. and now it looks like bots are making unauthorized edits to pages and trying to hack community tools diff.wikimedia.org/2026/10/05/o...
Wiki editing: We’ve identified edits to Wikimedia wikis that we believe are from AI agents operated by OpenAI. These edits were not published to pages with visibility to general readers; almost all of them were testing edits in “sandbox” areas of the wiki. It also included a few edits to the configuration for a citation tool, which we believe were potentially malicious edits that were intended to misuse this tool as a proxy for fetching data from remote services. While Wikipedia policies allow bots to edit when they are disclosed and approved by the community, none of those approvals were sought in these incidents.
Etherpad probing and use: Agents we believe to be operated by OpenAI made some unsuccessful attempts to compromise our public Etherpad, a note-taking tool we host as a community service. Agents unsuccessfully tried to use it to fetch data from other websites as a proxy. Other agents also likely operated by OpenAI took notes about their tasks, though this did not appear to turn into coordination.
Excessive data downloading: Agents we believe to be operated by OpenAI made millions of automated requests to our public APIs to access the knowledge on Wikimedia projects, crawled millions of pages (mainly from our projects Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons), and made hundreds of thousands of data queries to the Wikidata Query Service (WDQS). This traffic may have contributed to a partial outage on WDQS in May. Wikimedia’s volunteers are the ones who come in first contact with, and clean up the mess left behind by AI agents. Rising bot traffic and agentic activity is showing a real impact on the Wikimedia projects and the infrastructure that makes it available for millions of users globally. In 2025, the Foundation reported that its bandwidth usage had increased by 50% due to the surge of bot activity on its websites since 2024. At the same time, 65% of the most resource-consuming traffic on its projects was coming from bots.

Ballpoint pen and colored pencil.

At the top of the piece we see the delicately drawn branches and leaves of an apple tree. Just beneath the tree limbs, a bat is flying with one of the green apples in its mouth. This is when the morphing begins, reader. A sequence of 13 drawings show the bat morphing into a teeny witch (with completion of the morph around drawing #9). The morphing creates a spiral leading us to the center of the page where the little witch is running towards her basket filled with apples. It’s likely she’ll re-morph into a bat again and the morphing pattern will continue.

In my state a "shitty cosmetology certificate" is mandatory to obtain a license to, you know, use sharp implements around the scalp and face of strangers.
A post on X by Matthew Yglesias that reads, "We had a weird panic last week about a new Trump student loan rule that tweaks a Biden student loan rule that updated an Obama student loan rule -- all three versions mostly target shitty cosmetology certificates not your precious liberal arts degree." The post also contains a link, and shows a picture of someone practicing hairstyling techniques on a mannequin.

How many 50-year-old roofers there are? Zero. One reason unions fight for high wages is because careers are SHORT.

"Skydance" is very much in the naming convention of "Berkshire Hathaway," a name applied to a company that is vaguely reminiscent of what it was a long time ago, preserved only because the principal owner of the company is for some reason very attached to it.

This is weird but putting Casey Bloys in charge of all streaming is also weird? Why toss WB's pretty good movie bosses, what is Paramount doing right in movies? I don't think you can rename HBO Max a fortieth time so are you just going to can Paramount+? Or is Bloys supposed to manage two services?
