When Trump’s broke brain muses about Iran destroying San Diego does he think that reads as a woke city to a Nebraska crowd or does he really fantasize about losing 100,000 active duty military on his watch?

I was tempted to pirate HP, curiosity and all that. But @jessiegender.bsky.social is right - think of the amount of times HBO commented on GOT leaks and downloads, just as an example. They DO track these things, and even that drives interest. Let this show die. Trans people deserve better.

This is an important statement people, and especially elected Dems need to really understand. The current Republican project is one of destruction, by design. Yes, they have other goals, in RFK’s case he’s objectively pro-disease, but their primary metric of success is breaking government.

I was born in 1984, my frames of reference are different to *most* Millenials since I’m an early printing. There’s no real line between generations, it’s just one long linear track and it’s so much more diverse than a series of monoliths. But that fact makes it harder to divide and conquer.

While Millennials and Gen Z blame each other for ruining society, the same monsters that have been ruining society since before we were all born are laughing their asses off. Generational divides are made up, and that’s fine until they’re weaponized to keep us fighting over complete bullshit.

While I admit that the way we measure tech's economic impact leaves room for improvement, I must admit, the fact that AI sales have been an economic nothingburger makes sense when you recognize that it came from a tech industry that's run out of ideas. www.wheresyoured.at/premium-how-...
We’re over a trillion dollars into the AI bubble with hyperscalers expecting to spend a trillion dollars more next year, and as you’ve read today, it’s really unclear as to what it is we’ve done other than pumping tech stocks and a chunk of GDP growth that is almost certain to disappear once the money runs out.

For the most part, every economic analysis I’ve found has tried to put lipstick on a pig. Putting aside GPU sales and data center construction, AI software sales and AI model efficacy do not appear to have had much of a meaningful impact on GDP, and what effect sales have had appears to have been vastly-inflated by outdated methodologies that have failed to keep pace with a tech industry that has, for the most part, not really innovated much in the last 15 years.

LLMs are too inconsistent, too unpredictable and too expensive to replace human beings, and none of the data I’ve seen seems to suggest that they’re doing much to enhance human productivity outside of accelerating the amount of questionably-stable and secure software shipped on a daily basis. LLMs are too inconsistent, too unpredictable and too expensive to replace human beings, and none of the data I’ve seen seems to suggest that they’re doing much to enhance human productivity outside of accelerating the amount of questionably-stable and secure software shipped on a daily basis. How much of the sales pitch of an Instinct or Muse “agent” is giving people the means of escaping the poorly-designed labyrinth of different apps and websites that we’re forced to use, each one built not to serve a purpose but to push us down particular rabbit holes to boost engagement? How much of “AI” and its supposed (unfulfilled) promises is based on rising above a software stack that is built with little consideration of efficiency or productivity?

While one might argue that this is somewhere AI would actually succeed, the problem is making it succeed in a way that’s economically feasible. Meta, Instinct and OpenAI may have found “easier” ways to “get tasks done,” but if completing these tasks increases the cost from zero to even 50 cents a piece, is that a “productive” transaction? And what if the task is left incomplete, and the user is left either with something broken, or the task is completed using hallucinated information?

These are all problems created by a tech industry run by companies that want to juice engagement and make numbers go up rather than actually making people more productive or successful.

If I’m honest, I thought I’d have a different answer at the end of this — that there would be some sort of big idea that economists were capturing as a result of their giant brains and academic backgrounds.

In the end, I think they might be as lost as all of the rest of us.

talked about this before and again, i'm speaking as a third generation journeyman trades worker, but working in trades is not something that any of the people who write these pieces, or honestly most of you, respect at all. It's perceived as something you do when all the "good" options are gone.

I read the ending and I wanted to koolaid man through a wall!!
Screenshot of article which reads: To restore a functioning and
pluralistic democracy in the United States, reversing over a decade of
democratic backsliding in the world’s oldest democracy, the thing to
“fix” is not polarization. Polarization is the country’s immune response
to an unpopular, antidemocratic, and intentionally divisive faction grabbing for disproportionate power to the detriment of national success,
reputation, and democratic self-government. Tamping down that immune response only allows this minority faction to have greater control.Screenshot of article which reads: But the fury of the argument shows the importance of the outcome.
When we focus on polarization as the problem, the solution is for ev-
eryone to quiet down and be “civil”—an outcome that benefits those
who are willing to grab as much power as they can without concern
for legality or civility. When we see the problem for what it is, the
solution is to defend the most robust social progress in American his-
tory—progress that has already been codified into law and enjoyed
by everyone alike. U.S. democracy needs leaders who are willing to
defend those rights and voters who are willing to hold accountable the
leaders who will not defend them. It does not need everyone simply to calm down.

"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph
Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.
