Another migrant species has decided to visit our little town of Bijagua, a rare visitor to this part of Costa Rica: the Black-throated Blue Warbler. Escaping the cold of the eastern US, it was enjoying many worms in the forest today. #birds #warblers 🌿
A small bird perched on a moss-covered branch. The bird has a dark blue back and head, a black throat and face, and a white belly and chest. Its bill is small and pointed and its legs are thin and a light pink. The background is softly blurred, featuring shades of green and brown of the forest.

happy monday, please enjoy this cardinal being absolutely perturbed that a downy woodpecker invaded her personal space 🪶 Winston-Salem NC, November 2024
A bare horizontal-ish branch in the bright afternoon sun. On the far right side sits a female Northern Cardinal, back to the camera, but looking intently to the left, where a female downy woodpecker is perched, facing right towards the Cardinal. Close up of the same Northern Cardinal and Downy Woodpecker on the same branch. In this frame they are much closer together - the woodpecker is upside down on the underside of the branch, and the Cardinal is almost directly above her, beak ajar, looking exasperated. The same Cardinal and woodpecker on the same bare branch. The woodpecker is still upside down on the branch and the Cardinal is still right side up, and has moved a little further to the right, away from the woodpecker. She is, however looking angrily in the woodpecker’s direction The Cardinal and woodpecker in the same position on the branch as the previous photo, however in this one, the Cardinal is looking out, mid-chirp, beak ajar, the crest feathers on her head fully extended up into a point

Sun breaks through dark clouds, the jagged peaks of Teton range can be seen in the distance, there is a line of evergreen trees and larches in the middle ground and grass and still water in the foreground. Small plants with gold and red leaves fill the bottom and left of the frame.

Merry day seven of #fishmas! This is a naked goby, the same species and individual in my profile picture. Naked gobies are so named because their bodies lack scales, instead covered in a thin layer of slime. These gobies are euryhaline, equally comfortable in both marine and freshwater conditions.
A close-up photo of a naked goby, turned towards the camera. She is perched on her pectoral fins, sitting in a pale rock. Her body is smooth, scaleless, and cigar-shaped, colored dark greyish-brown with thin pale stripes. Her head is lighter than the rest of her body, taking on a subtly yellowish mottled hue. Her eyes are positioned on the top of her head and bulge outwards, somewhat like a frog. Her mouth is held slightly open. The same naked goby, now facing directly towards the camera. She is a slightly lighter color, and is sitting amongst red branches of algae and green filamentous algae. Her dorsal fins are held upright.

A freshly-molted Zammara smaragdina cicada in the forest last night at my house. These were plentiful a few months ago when it was warmer, and I was kind of surprised to see one now. #costarica #bugsky #invertebrates #cicadas 🌿
A dazzling insect clings delicately to a vibrant green leaf, its translucent wings resembling finely crafted stained glass. The wings shimmer with hues of aqua and emerald, crisscrossed by intricate, vein-like patterns outlined in silvery white. Its luminous green body glows with an almost metallic sheen, highlighted by subtle flecks of gold. Two prominent, jet-black eyes glisten under the light, adding a sense of mystery to its elegant form. Behind it, the blurred background of foliage creates a natural frame, accentuating this delicate yet otherworldly moment in the heart of the rainforest.

It's turtles all the way...over. #TurtleTuesday #herps #NaturePhotography 🌿
Photo of a still pond, with the far bank at the top third of the photo, filled with bushes and trees. In the middle of the pond is a log, running across the entire width of the photo. Perched on the log are 36 basking turtles, all in a line, most of them facing away from the camera. The photo is taken from distance, but their narrow heads and necks can be seen sticking up from their oval shells. Between the line of turtles and the far bank there is a single turtle basking on a small branch. Perhaps there is no more room on the log, or maybe this single turtle wants some alone time.
