Both these images show native trees, which are actually side by side. Yet they look entirely different. Why? Those on the left grew naturally, the others are a plantation. Both officially count as 'native forest', but the first is SO much better as wildlife habitat. It's a diverse *ecosystem*.

Spending time in the presence of one of Ireland's extremely rare ancient trees, like this hulking oak near Bandon with local man Dan Holland, are for me life highlights. But it's always bittersweet, tempered by the knowledge that such stupendous beings were once commonplace. We have lost SO much.

A micro nature reserve on a Dublin street. Only the tree was planted, everything else seeded in naturally once the railing went up. Imagine all the invertebrate life going on in there. Above all, nature just needs space to do its thing.

Here in Oregon you can find these bright yellow banana slugs, but only in the wettest rainiest areas in the hills. They get so long and they’re so bright, I really like them.
A bright yellow banana slug that is long and skinny. It has a big mantel behind its eye stocks, and you can see its breathing hole there. The rest of its body has a fin running down the back towards its tail.

That is some article isn't it? Doesn't distinguish forestry from forests. Doesn't mention species at risk of windthrow or unsuitable planting soils or locations. Or that the soils were disturbed through draining & planting & harvesting a previous crop and the soil carbon was mostly lost already 😡
