Ed was in a fucked up position. He knew it. His typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never had been before. He told me that the words
"Free Palestine" and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with. I told him that if those words were more offensive than tens of thousands of Palestinian children being killed by Israel, then there was a fundamental disconnect between where those people stood and where I stood. But he couldn't get past his public facing, "I don't take sides."

A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”

Cheryl Reeve offers thoughtful reaction to WNBA anti-trans rallies: ‘Do they understand actually what the real problems are?’
The Indiana Fever are in the midst of a road trip, and the WNBA team has been attracting a certain group of followers wherever they go. "These young girls that are sitting at games with anti-trans signs, do they understand actually what the real problems are and how they’re being marginalized? We’re still not in a space where we have equality."
“Years ago, I encouraged the WNBA leadership: what’s our stance? What are we going to do when this occurs? Are we going to be ready? Are we going to be reactionary? And so I think it would make sense for our league to be leaders in this space,” she said. ” … I’ve chosen to educate myself about the space. I’ve chosen to listen to transgender families, and what I know is exclusion is not the answer. We’ve got to find a common ground and be inclusive. That’s the space. I think if we all come from that.”

Reeve then pondered the real issues facing women’s sports and whether the people attempting to “defend” them even know what they are.

“The [transgender]issue isn’t as big as the issues that we have in women’s sports,” she continued. “Whether it’s cisgender men that have held us down for years in spaces like being able to have access to facilities and uniforms and locker rooms, all the things that these young girls that are sitting at games with anti-trans signs, do they understand actually what the real problems are and how they’re being marginalized? We’re still not in a space where we have equality. We don’t even have the Equal Rights Amendment in all 50 states, right? So there’s real issues. This is an issue that I think that we can thoughtfully work through, and that’s my hope."
