So now I use the anonymous form on their website to report myself for having grass that's too long. Sandra has to walk all the way over with a ruler and measure it once a week. These people — why don’t they leave? As Victor would point out, that’s a very privileged question to ask of every single character on the show. Seeing the characters wrestle with that can be painful and enervating, but it can also be funny. “I’m sorry there’s an evil presence in the hospital that may be killing you. Let’s take you out for pizza!” Things like that are kind of a paltry consolation, but it’s one the characters often settle for. “Oh, Josephine’s mom made us lumpia, so this will be a nice day!” When they have the keys, Dorry uses them on the utility closet, where they keep all the shitty cookies. At the end of the day, they choose cookies instead of escape. Those little self-consolations, which are beautiful and also pathetic and nowhere near enough to correct a predatory system, are what’s at play in the story throughout.

This idea of complacency is very resonant and potent today. You wake up every day, and here’s the situation at hand: How do I address that? Can I address that? Do I have any agency to do so? How do I just survive from the morning until when I can crash into the bed at night, and hopefully make it another day? Does that make me complicit in some way in the system that perpetuates over all our heads and grinds us up into meat fuel? I think that’s something a lot of people are feeling.
