Every single newspaper that reported that Jane Doe “changed her story” should be rushing to publish retractions right now. This case should be a lesson in taking a DA’s victim-blaming statements at face value. Victims do not report to the police because they thought nothing happened to them.

The modern-day legal basis for the criminalization of immigrants largely rests on two anti-immigrant bills signed into law by Bill Clinton 30 years ago. The IIRIRA and the AEDPA further entrenched mass incarceration and laid the blueprint for the detention and deportation machine we have today.

All of this. I also want to add that, in my research, I found that a lot of “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story actually came from gender bias affecting investigators’ record keeping and interview methods.

whenever we get close to seeing a systemic problem with policing, media rushes to frame it as a training problem. however, police culture is at the core of its mistreatment of victims and rape cases. policing is a tool of white supremacy AND *male* supremacy

This is a reminder that the fraternity system was created to oppose race and gender integration on college campuses. White men who wanted to keep their schools—and all the power that comes with college education—to themselves. It is not a coincidence that they are hotbeds of violence.

I believe fraternity hazing and military hazing and sports team hazing where men abuse each other is acclimating them into a broader culture of abuse where they will then believe it is their right to abuse other more vulnerable people. It’s so insidious. And that’s also why I think men defend it

Another thing about fraternities is that the hazing rituals where slightly older young men would physically, mentally emotionally and sometimes even sexually abuse slightly younger young men have always disturbed and upset me greatly. And it’s really telling that I’ve seen men defend those too

A truly heinous man has doxxed the Cornell victim on X and the comments are predictably vile. Based on countless interviews I’ve done with survivors, the trauma they are subjected to for coming forward is oftentimes even worse than the initial trauma they experienced. The main reason you haven’t heard about campus sexual violence in a few years is because Trump and SCOTUS have made it much, much harder for survivors to come forward. You might vaguely remember that Title IX was a big battleground in his first term. And that we lost.

It's too grim to face the situation we are in, every time these cases come out in the news, which is there there is no law, policy, or policing remedy to sexual violence, and definitely not one that is capable of ending sexual violence.

One casualty of the past decade has been the illusion that systemic issues just needed to be “exposed.” How much more exposed could they be? The takeaway is that virtually no one with the power to change anything actually wants anything to change. They like these things the way they are.
