Meme of a school bus being hit by a train. The first image is a school bus labeled "Me, not caring about the Bee Gees." The second image is a train hitting that school bus, labeled "Sad little meow meow who writes songs about historical mining disasters."

I kind of think that we won't come to terms with the effect of the internet on mental health until we can talk about the whole spectrum from "people talking with their friends" to "influencers talking to their customers"

Love it when a sentence makes me befuddled about my own linguistic intuitions. Sounds bad to me: "Please put the VMAs out of its misery." Sounds nearly as bad: "Please put the VMAs out of their misery." Definitely worse: "Please put the VMAs out of their miseries."

Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

Skydivers alert emergency crews, assist after plane crashes near East Troy airport
Four people were aboard the single-engine plane when it went down in a cornfield near Carvers School Road in East Troy at about 1:30 p.m.

I once read the quote "If you want love and abundance in your life, give it away" on an herbal tea box, attributed to Mark Twain. I've read a lot of quotes attributed to Mark Twain, and he said some of them, but he definitely didn't say that one.

Thinking "I'll be under my gas budget for September if I don't fill my tank, but then I can't go hiking..." reminds me of that Marx quote where he says that the more you refrain from eating, drinking, buying books, etc, the greater the saving of your alienated being.

The problem with education is that it's a solved problem. Students need small classes, individual attention, lots of writing, lots of feedback, access to a well-stocked library, time to think, and time to talk with their peers. We just don't like the answer, so we keep trying to do other stuff.

Sometimes you have a day when your mood is absolute trash even though things are otherwise totally fine so you go to barometricpressure.app and then it's like, oh, OK then.
A screenshot from barometricpressure.app that shows the barometric pressure heading downwards throughout September 19th, before being predicted to start rising again.

I am not the person who complains when the ebook is just as expensive as the print book. I understand, reasonably well, the economics of book publishing. I have not complained as ebook novel prices crept up to $14, 15, 16. But holy heck, THIRTY THREE DOLLARS for the ebook edition of a cookbook?

Going in and out of love with this book, which is a peculiar feeling. Most books I love or hate straight away; or else they win me over very gradually, or lose me very gradually. Rarely such a patchwork of yes and no.

The problem is that "while you weren't looking the tech industry was comprehensively taken over by a cult based around a piece of Harry Potter fanfic" is self-evidently an absolutely ridiculous claim that can't possibly have happened, which is a real problem given that it 100% did happen.

I think some people say "you can break the rules if you're a genius" to mean "every rule can be broken to good effect" and some people say it to mean "if people already think you're a genius, they will cut you more slack to write badly," and we end up talking past each other
