Honestly don’t know how we continue functioning as a society with such a small number of people vacuuming up this much wealth. Basically the equivalent of the US defense budget was rerouted to 500 people in just the last nine months.

Dark thread. Since we watched Musk literally push a "protect the Boers" button in real time with Grok, we now know people or companies could theoretically pay their way into putting a thumb on the scale for Grok/Claude/ChatGPT. This is why the AI stans want you to believe it's thinking

This isn't an AI thing, but it explains why executives think AI is great. They *already* live like they have been kicked in the head by a horse. They already have a group of people making sure they've wiped their ass. They already don't have exposure to negative consequences.

Humoring conservatives & acting like they make good points over the last 30 years brought us here. You never have to listen to them for the rest of our lives. It's time to treat career arsonists with the contempt they've earned instead of imagining a fake world where they're reasonable interlocutors

This is why I think it's so important to push back against the personification of LLMs. If a person shoots someone while wearing a hand puppet, they can't claim the hand puppet did the murder.

If Democrats were serious they would go straight for the jugular of the crypto industry as soon as they take power. There’s public policy reasons to do this (name a non-crime use case), but also it cuts off a major artery for Republican support and corruption.

[Left side, an illustration of the "Virgin" character (from the Virgin vs. Chad meme format) modified into a robot. His head is a retro computer monitor with a glowing red dot on the screen, and his body has thin metallic limbs. A computer mouse hangs from his back by a wire, and loose paperclips float around his legs.]

"the virgin "AGI existential risk"

- programmer LARP fantasy that makes coding the single most important skill for saving humanity
- fake and made up
- entirely based on thought experiments
- assumes that there's this vaguely defined concept known as "intelligence" that can be linearly increased as if it were a mathematical quantity
- projects an anthropomorphic drive toward control and power onto algorithms that just do statistics to spit out words; colonialist self-report
- Zero evidence
- sponsored by billionaires who want to make their technology seem more important than it is
- blackmails you from the future using faulty logic; doesn't actually make any sense
- "oh no, i guess we have to build the Doom Machine now. i guess the course of technological progress is inevitable, oh well""

[Right side, an illustration of the "Chad" character, replaced by a globe of the Earth. A large fire burns at the top of the globe, and three black oil derricks are on the yellow landmass, which is shaped like a facial profile. He has muscular blue arms and legs and wears yellow shoes.]

"the Chad Global Warming

- incomprehensibly complex and interconnected polycrisis
- reveals deep-rooted flaws with the dominant politico-economic paradigm; demands a fundamental shift of human value systems by its sheer physical existence
- verified by the entire scientific community
- billionaires don't want you to think about it because it is too scary
- resists ideological simplification
- will actually kill you
- divine retribution for fossil capital's greed and wanton exploitation of the natural world
- doesn't even need intelligence to threaten humanity's survival"

A digitally drawn montage of scene's from Hayao Miyazaki's animated movie Porco Rosso. In the foreground wwe see Porco flying his Savoia S.21 seaplane. It's a bright red monoplane with a fuselage shaped like a porpoise and the wing mounted above and in front of the cockpit, and the single large, bulbous, shiny red prop engine mounted on top of that. Outrigger floats hang down from the underside of each wing and the vertical stabilizer is painted in the colors of the Italian flag. Porco is looking down toward the Adriatic sea below. From a string of clouds behind the plane rises a closeup portrait of Porco in the plane's cockpit. He's a human with a cartoon pig's head, he's got a little black curled mustache, and he's wearing round sunglasses, leather headgear with goggles pushed up on top of his head, a white silk scarf and a tan jumpsuit. He is smiling past the one side of his mustache and giving a thumbs up to the viewer. Under the plane in the bottom right of the rough-edged frame in yellow handwriting is written 'Maybe it will happen today'.

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.

I agree that the tech backlash has a lot to do with the fact that Silicon Valley has pretty much given up on giving us cool things - and has trained us to assume that tech products that *seem* cool are probably secretly evil. I wrote about this last year:

I Just Want a Cute Robot Lamp That Isn't Evil
Apple's engineers have figured out how to design a robot lamp so adorable that everyone I've shown the video to says they'd die for it. By studying how to translate human expression into the movement...

To me, the foundational tension of modern AI is this: If the stated goal is to create a human-level intelligence that can replace human workers but lacks human rights, then the real aspiration is slavery; but if human-level intelligence is impossible, then the industry's stated goal is a lie.

With very little exaggeration that _is_ the “unitary executive” theory. Congress imposes taxes and hands the money to the executive, along with a budget that amounts to a friendly suggestion of how to spend it. The executive then spends the money however he cares to after taking 10% off the top.
