At this rate, we'll be staging public drownings of migrants, to address 'legitimate concerns': Stewart Lee on the collapse of compassion in post-Brexit Britain. Stylised image of a RNLI ferry

I went on OpenAI's first ever brand trip last week. It was awesome. And posting about it introduced me to the shocking AI psychosis running rampant online.

How do I say this? I live firmly in the real world.

With people who participate in society, pay their bills and work to make their lives better for themselves and their families.

If any of these people don't like the idea of AI (ahem my mother), they talk about it or they don't. They use it or they don't. They do not run around like a chicken with their heads cut off, screaming about water usage and wildlife and (curiously) fascism.

I genuinely had no idea that people were this anti-AI. This steeped in misinformation about it. This crazed by the idea of it ruining the planet.

If I had, I probably wouldn't have made a video talking about the trip while running a bath...

But alas I did not know. I thought it was incredibly exciting to get to be in the room with the people shaping how this technology gets used. I thought people would be interested in the behind the scenes tips and tricks. I didn't for one second consider it could be controversial.

And what gets my goat, honestly, is that every single of the commenters is on a smartphone. Most are wearing clothes made in factories with poor working conditions if not child labor. Most use Amazon. Most drive by litter and don't pick it up. Most eat at restaurants that don't recycle. They're all on either Instagram or Tik Tok- two of the most addicting, extractive (if not straight up corrupt) …
