I think there’s a misunderstanding of the term “EU Accession negotiations”. Negotiation, in this sense, is primarily over how and by when an applicant will implement or align with each area of EU law (Acquis Communautaire), and then whether they‘ve done that. It’s not over *whether* they will.

This is the thing that always gets me from so many modern politicians: they seem *desperate* to argue the only real work is working on an oil rig, farming or fishing. They crap all over the arts and universities, which are MASSIVE employers and industries in which the UK has long excelled.

Tory Lam on Burnham EU proposals: argues it would be “appallingly undemocratic”. A fair point. If you ignore current polling – and almost every poll since 2016. And this needing a democratic Labour election win. And this also likely needing another referendum. But apart from that… undemocratic!

This is a superb episode, not least the parts that dig into the realities of the triple lock, how major reform takes time, and also how parties responded (and could have responded) to Burnham’s care pledge.

Indeed. This is the response Davey should have made. Instead, he looks petulant and his party entirely redundant. This despite AB basically serving up a promise to enact things Libs have been fighting for – and Starmer and co resisted – for years. What a missed opportunity.

Craig Grannell @craiggrannell.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I was listening to @quietriotpod.bsky.social earlier and the presenters remarked that other leaders are finding it hard to respond to Burnham. This is a case in point. AB basically unveiled a Lib Dem wish list, but Davey has gone on the attack – perhaps in part since his own conf was a damp squib.

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

If Burnham makes good on this stuff, it would be transformative. Lib Dems and Greens now need to recognise the massive opportunity. For the former in particular, Burnham basically checked a shit-tonne of stuff off their wish-list. *And* Lab/LD are rarely fighting for the same seats anyway.

The BBC news summary this morning went seamlessly from "critics warn PM scrapping triple lock would be electoral suicide" to "critics ask if PM has nerve to make tough decisions" and I don't think it's a particularly pro Burnham stance to suggest he might not be the entire problem here.

The depressing thing about these polls isn’t movement (or lack thereof) of parties – it’s that UK politics now appears to be “doing a USA”, in the sense the voters are evenly split between “massive shitheads” and “everyone else”. I just hope when a GE rocks up that Ref/Con still despise each other.

The key thing here will be a neutral and expert party making recommendations and Labour following them, rather than Labour only enacting electoral reform that’s in the best interests specifically of Labour. Still: some hope, finally, that one of the big two will move away from FPTP.

One thing I miss from The Bad Place™ is pinging a brand with a problem and it then getting sorted. At best, you might now chat over Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp. And brands can respond in ways very different from how you might expect. (Recently: Tesco = v good. Waitrose = a polite “fuck off”.)
