From my amateur reading of history, it seems to me that celebrity generals are not a great sign
Screenshot of an article titled “The Battle to Save a Pioneering General From Pete Hegseth’s Purge.” Below the headline, a photo shows U.S. Army Gen. Christopher Donahue in camouflage and a maroon beret, surrounded by other soldiers in matching uniforms and berets. Donahue stands near the center, extending one hand forward while speaking with the group.

Assert victory in the culture war. Brand conservatives as morally deficient perverts. They have no respect for decent American family values like protecting your infants from measles, loving your children even if they change their gender, and not beating your wife

One thing I wish people would realize is just how central JK Rowling is to the entire anti-trans ecosystem. Looking at a network node analysis of the top 200 anti-trans X accounts, she is the most central figure spanning both sides of the Atlantic from Republicans to Labour.
A network graph visualization on a dark background showing connections between various accounts. The central, highly connected node is labeled "J.K. Rowling," with lines radiating out to many other nodes color-coded by region (UK, US, etc.). A detail panel on the right displays stats for her account, including her role as "Author & commentator," an in-degree of 153, an out-degree of 84, and 14 million followers.A scatter plot graph on a dark background comparing accounts based on "followers (log)" on the x-axis and "in-degree" on the y-axis. The data points are color-coded by region. J.K. Rowling is highlighted as a major outlier in the top right corner, possessing the highest number of followers and the highest in-degree. Other labeled points lower on the graph include various politicians, individuals, and campaign organizations.

this guy got caught because he's dumber than the average cop and chose a woman who wasn't marginalized enough. imagine what happens when a cop does this to, say, a sex worker or a woman with previous charges who are not likely to be willing to report this kind of thing. what do you think happens

The problem is that LLMs have been conflated with neural nets and machine learning. The former are effectively useless, a speculative bubble of nonsense that actively harms human capacity for knowledge. The latter are possibly revolutionary tools that could transform society.

Is there ever a time now when he's not trying to ignite a race war?
Derek Chauvin was unjustly convicted of murder, therefore he should be freed.

The facts show that he was not the cause of death, nor did he at any time intend for a death to occur. Whatever else he may be, he is not a murderer.

That is the truth.

Discworld QOTD, from Snuff
Vimes knew about life below stairs, hell, yes, he did! Not so long ago a policeman summoned to a big house would be sent around to the back door to be instructed to drag away some weeping chambermaid or not-very-bright boot boy accused without evidence of stealing some ring or silver-handled brush that the lady of the house would probably find later, perhaps when she had finished the gin. That wasn’t supposed to be what coppers were for, although in reality, of course it was what coppers were for. It was about privilege, and young Vimes had hardly worn in his first pair of policeman’s boots when his sergeant had explained what that meant. It meant private law. In those days an influential man could get away with quite a lot if he had the right accent, the right crest on his tie or the right chums, and a young policeman who objected might get away without a job and without a reference.

It's a bad system, perhaps the only idea genuinely and unambiguously worse than traditional FPTP and party primaries. I'm an electoral reform nerd and I would vote against it. California's very likely to repeal it soon, it's been such a complete failure.

This is Natalie Harp, the close aide to President Trump. These clips are from 2021 when she worked at OAN. She ended her program with a daily Bible quote. Sometimes she swapped out the Bible for a quote from Trump leading with "And remember what Trump said..."

I think the ultimate test of this is actually Boris Johnson. Boris *was fired from his first job* for making up stories, only to go on to be hired into a prestigious role at the Telegraph and spend years lying about the EU at Brussels. And I mean literally lying here; not bad punditry.

many "centrists" agree with Cofnas and when they complain about "wokeness" and "political correctness" they often mean that they are not allowed to express this stupid idea — that black people in smart-guy jobs shouldn't be there and should be like, sprinters and jazz musicians instead — explicitly

I would argue this belief in scientific racism is in fact one of the main animating beliefs of "elite centrism" as practiced today. Important to realize this if you're trying to understand what motivates these people and how to deal with them.

"Make intelligence property, and its manager will have his match; he is met at every turn by an opposing will, not in the form of down-right rebellion and defiance, but yet, visibly, an ever-opposing will." Part of why slavers tortured the enslaved. Who wanted this returned to the world?

The Vanderbilt report is the ‘respectable’ center-right version of what the ‘deplorables’ on the MAGA Right are doing to universities. The end is the same: completely remake the university into a profit center for capital. Anthony Appiah and Sean Wilentz are apparently fine with this.

Elon Musk’s influence over the federal government is extraordinary, and extraordinarily lucrative.

Mr. Musk’s rocket company, SpaceX, effectively dictates NASA’s rocket launch schedule. The Defense Department relies on him to get most of its satellites to orbit. His companies were promised $3 billion across nearly 100 different contracts last year with 17 federal agencies.
