Of all the "stalwart liberal institutions" that have proven themselves worthless over my adult life, I think NPR is the one that hurts the most. This isn't new. I remember when they called Bush's torture program "enhanced interrogation". But it still fucking hurts

Two of the major conclusions I personally have drawn from following politics in my adult lifetime are that: (1) increased immigration is basically a cheat code for greater national prosperity and material wellbeing (2) most people increasingly fucking despise it

As Bret says, we can never eliminate these instincts -- they are inscribed in us by evolution -- but we can create circumstances less likely to activate & exacerbate them. Over time, we can create societies that create fewer fascists. That is the telos of liberalism, its reason for being.

A single bridge closing in a park shouldn't result in an 8.1 mile pedestrian / bike detour to cross a river. This is the result of the city & state removing from the park sidewalks, trails, and staircases that previously existed connecting to the alternative Strawberry Mansion Bridge.
An image of the map showing the lengthy detour.

The fundraising texts you delete are working on someone. It’s infuriating and heartbreaking. An 85yo in Ohio gave more than double the value of his home. A 91yo in an Indianapolis senior facility gave 25K times. The DCCC/DSCC don’t just tolerate the spammers who exploit seniors. They take part.

as a political philosopher I find this interesting: Sagal's frame "but it appears to be true" gives the impression that truth is the focal issues here. but maybe not! my very first publication as a baby philosopher was on "Trojan horse propaganda": true statements that function as propaganda
Peter Sagal:

"Everybody is furious at Mr Lipton for saying this but it appears to be true. Here’s the WSJ:"

WSJ screenshot in Peter Sagal's post:

"Leavitt had a reputation for being helpful to inquiring reporters: Replies to requests for comment often arrived with friendly exclamation points-even if she had just berated some of them for a "stupid question" in the briefing room moments before."

Eric Lipton NYT's quoted post:

"One you might find surprising. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt & members of her team have been extremely helpful in responding to questions I raise. Regardless of public facing commentary, privately they are willing to engage and address questions. And I have appreciated that. Thank you"

Like, I agree that the Trolley Problem is not a useful question in terms of determining what to do about a runaway trolley, but also it's not a question about how to solve runaway trolleys, it's a question about how we understand moral reasoning.

Very much this. So many on the right know a lot of what's going on is wrong on fundamental levels, and their response to anything that reminds them of that—the press, science, good behavior in general—is anger. They're transgressing, they know it, and they can't deal with being reminded.

I'd guess the "100%" workload has a bunch of cores spending their time blocked waiting for the results of some previous computation. But a workload that doesn't fit in vram and causes the working set to thrash between vram and system ram is also a possibility.

Great piece on the largely imaginary shoplifting surge: I do think one thing the piece misses is that a bunch of major police departments started years-long work slowdowns in 2020 where they refused to do their jobs (often falsely claiming their hands were tied by woke prosecutors)
