They’re live-streaming the execution of the person they think they can get away with doing that to first. It’s a test. If they can do that, they’ll expand the margins of permission.

"In other words, the people who are the most 'polarized' in the U.S. electorate are those who are racist and sexist, and those who oppose racists and sexists."
Screenshot of article which reads: These numbers are relatively similar between Democrats and Repub-
licans, which often leads political pundits to claim this is more evidence
of “polarization,” and that both sides are equally to blame. However,
a closer look tells a more interesting story. The people who are most
likely to vilify and dehumanize their partisan opponents are Republicans
who are high in racism and sexism and Democrats who oppose racism
and sexism. The people who are least likely to vilify and dehumanize
their political opponents are Republicans who are low in racism and sex-
ism. One explanation for these patterns is that those Republicans who
are racist and sexist vilify and dehumanize Democrats because they see
the Democratic Party as a party of racial minorities and women; and
Democrats who score low in racism and sexism will vilify and dehu-
manize Republicans because they consider Republicans to be racist and
sexist. In other words, the people who are the most “polarized” in the
U.S. electorate are those who are racist and sexist, and those who op-
pose racists and sexists.

One of the central plants of my front yard, a Mt. Etna Broom, was so ugly and lopsided even after 10+ years of training and pruning -- I took it out this Spring, hearing it rarely resprouts. Welp. Mine did. Maybe better form this time?

Not to be some wild-eyed innocent, but I think it should be slightly bigger news that The Lancet have crunched the numbers and found that Musk's USAID cuts will kill 14 million people. And that's just by 2030. That's 9,600 people a day, every day, until the next world cup rolls around.

Dem consultants who believe that "kitchen table issues" -- material self-interest -- can sway right-wing voters should take note of the fact that many of those voters are willing to directly harm themselves in service of their deranged ideological hatreds.

The fact that most of the wealthiest people in the world are awful illustrates that the key requirement for extreme, obscene wealth isn’t “genius.” It’s shamelessness/ruthlessness.

AI IS STUPID. And I don't mean this in the "that's just my opinion" way, I mean this in the "it is incorrect more than 40% of the time" way. That's an F grade btw, in case it isn't sinking in for you.

I will never forgive or forget the cowardice of wealthy, powerful, safe people during this period. Yes, it’s a constant across history, in all periods of authoritarian ascent. But there is no reason — today — to bow to a historically unpopular, failing president.

One of the most clarifying passages I've ever read on what "polarization" actually means in the U.S."
Excerpt from the book How Democracies Die.

"America's democratic norms, then, were born in a context of exclusion. As long as the political community was restricted largely to whites, Democrats and Republicans had much in common. Neither party was likely to view the other as an existential threat. The process of racial inclusion that began after World War II and culminated in the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act would, at long last, fully democratization the United States. But it would also polarized it, posing the greatest challenge to established forms of mutual tolerating and forbearance since Reconstruction."

The entire idea of white guilt as a right radicalizing force was a projection built on the idea that there was an imagined social pressure being placed on white people to feel guilt & responsibility for the sins of their ancestors & their solution was to let a whole new set of white guys ruin things

Every major disaster in this country over my lifetime has been self inflicted by right wing ideologues with just enough complicit or inert Democrats to enable or ratify them. That's why we've been on this doom trajectory for the last ~50 years and it'll keep getting worse if that doesn't change
