Tangentially, the military has made a service-wide push into using personal phones as work devices, meaning Meta is no doubt ingesting sensitive if not classified/secret data. And I’d be curious what this might mean for Signal.

Anyway if Meta is doing this with your texts I’m not sure what’s stopping them from ingesting your whole hard drive so you should probably assume they are.

It ALMOST feels like we’re just starting to reach the normies with “the federal government and Silicon Valley have joined forces to spy on every aspect of your life and it’s called Palantir” and it’s either going to be the turning point for radical privacy or cripple the concept forever.

Basically using LLMs and agentic ai is a massive security risk and no one should do so basically ever and these companies should be prosecuted for hacking. Also two-party consent should extend to all electronic communications.

To say nothing of maliciously accessing apps of their users without permissions. Which is why we know these companies are not respecting robots.txt to block their crawlers.

A key component of the Cambridge Analytica outrage was your friends subjecting you to data theft without your consent or knowledge. Facebook is running the same playbook on your text messages. Even if you’re not on Meta properties, they’re ingesting your interactions.
Aten installed Muse on both his iPhone and a Mac mini that he uses to test out various Al agents and tech. It took Meta a single day to begin "helpfully" pitching article ideas based on texts he'd sent to a podcast co-host.
When he asked Muse how it got the information, it said that it read banners from incoming texts. But that's not true, either.
After doing a little digging, Aten says Muse synced 187,000 lines from his Messages database, despite Full Disk Access being Off.Unless Aten is the most popular person on the face of the planet, I sincerely doubt he'd gotten 187,000 lines of text in roughly 24 hours. What happened is that, without permission, Muse went into the app and downloaded the information.
He had not given Muse permission to access Messages, and full disk access was not enabled. It just went ahead and uploaded those texts anyway.
Muse can take "unexpected actions" indeed.

Meta has enabled Muse to build extensive and ever-growing profiles on the orbit of people in a user’s life. Based on user input but also “publicly available information.” Whether that means a web search, Facebook’s own extensive data, or buying data broker info…we don’t know? And we can’t opt out.

Trans women have a special relationship to rape culture because we had a front seat to the horrific way sexist men openly "joke" about raping women they know or worse, especially in places like college that foster that behavior. It blew my mind they would just say things like that openly!!

For me, those phrases are an indicator that someone has either been violent themselves or they are invested in protecting a perpetrator in their life. People committed to non-violence see those phrases as the confessions they are.

In my own work, I’ve interviewed quite a few college-educated perpetrators. They justify their violence with a lot of the phrases we’ve heard floating around this week like, “It wasn’t rape—it was just nonconsensual,” or, “Yeah, it was bad, but should it ruin a guy’s life?”

Here’s the study link. This study upended the idea that campus rape is perpetrated by a small group of sociopaths. In all reality, most rapists are just ordinary men who hold sexist views, hang out with other men who hold sexist views, and seek power and status.

According to the most rigorous studies, 10.8% of college men perpetrate at least one rape before graduation. This statistic always comes to mind when I see men in power reacting with disgust to the idea that one of their peers could face even a shred of accountability.

the Cornell case should make us question prosecutors and police all the time: the same DA offices discounting college students’ sexual assault cases (the lacking investigations, the disbelief) are happy to jail countless women for far less, day in and day out, when most people aren’t watching

To interview an expert, claim corporate ownership of the convo, + feed that audio (likely unredacted!) into AI models to draw on without appropriate sensitivity to subject matter or context? Experts like Nicole aren't a soundbites jukebox, + folks who contribute their time/talent deserve better.

While digging around their website, I found their ethics policy—including a section on AI-generated content. I suspect that’s a part of what happened here. And I’m upset about that too! I did NOT speak to a journalist with the assumption that my interview would be funneled into producing AI slop.

The primary objective of journalism is supposed to be telling the truth. It is a DECISION on the part of USA Today to know that new details have emerged about this case and to refuse to update an old story that is still circulating and still shaming Jane Doe.

I'm not linking the piece because I'd like for as few people to read it as possible. I'm writing about it here because: - I want to be clear about what happened to anyone who saw that article and felt betrayed to see me associated with it. - These are bad decisions that deserve public shame.

Once I found out about it, I contacted the reporter and asked him to retract the piece--or at minimum add an editor's note acknowledging the NYT reporting about how Jane Doe did NOT tell police that she consented to her rape. Thus far, the publication has refused to do so.

Ironically, my original interview with the journalist I spoke with was primarily about how "inconsistencies" can come from gender bias in investigatory processes and then be blamed on survivors. It was the inspiration for this thread--but none of these points made it into any USA Today article:
