S. Michele Arcangelo (Saint Michael the Archangel) Maestro della Madonna della Croce Second half of the 13th century Wet-plaster wall painting technique (buon fresco), natural earth pigments 1.8 meters tall (5 feet 11 inches) Chiesa di Santa Lucia alle Malve Sassi di Matera, Italy Photo: Oct 9, 2026
The Archangel is depicted in imperial Byzantine-style court attire, holding a staff in one hand and an orb with a cross in the other, standing with wings spread.

Carved into the limestone cliffs between the 8th and 9th centuries, the church was Matera's very first female Benedictine monastic settlement. For hundreds of years, it was a cloister for nuns. By the 14th century, the nuns relocated up the hill. Then, the locals faced a housing crisis as people flooded into the Sassi. With space at a premium, the rock-hewn monastery was secularized and converted into family homes and agricultural stores.

For generations up until the forced evacuations of the 1950s, families lived inside the three hollowed-out naves. The magnificent frescoes, including this one, were subjected to black soot from cooking fires coated the centuries-old artwork.

This fresco is made using an ancient, specialized wet-plaster wall painting technique (buon fresco), combined with natural earth pigments applied directly onto the rock. Because it was painted inside a rock-hewn church (chiesa rupestre), to prepare the limestone, a layer of lime mortar and sand plaster was laid down. Medieval artists mixed local materials into the plaster, sometimes blending straw or animal hair to help the mortar bind tightly to the porous, damp cave rock.

The colors were achieved using durable raw ingredients ground into water. Iron oxides for the ochre reds and yellows, and ground minerals for the rich, dark blue background. Plant extracts and charcoal dust were used to outline the detailed geometric borders and shadows.

The painting was made while the plaster layer was still wet (a fresco). As the wet lime plaster dried, a chemical reaction occurred as the lime absorbed carbon dioxide from the cave air, forming a glassy, protective crust of calcium carbonate. This process chemically locked the pigments into the wall, allowing the artwork to survive centuries of damp cave conditions and the soot of fires.

Wow. This is so sleazy and alarming. #BradBradford is a slimeball. He’s backed by the same developer sleaze that put Rob & #DougFord into power. Chris Alexander dropped out of the Toronto mayoral race & now a mysterious other ‘Chow’ appears on the ballot right above Olivia?? #TOpoli #VoteOlivia
jan.goodwin.946 11h
There is a Braeden Chow listed right above Olivia
Chow's name on the voting ballot for Mayor in Toronto.
Since when were there two Chows and why wasnt this flagged? It's small type, his band appears first and people in a hurry could easily see Chow and vote for him thinking it is Olivia. Somehow, the names should have been separated, or one printed in bold. Considering how close the margin is between her and Bradford, details like this could make or break an election.

Put another way, Ford wants to spend more on removing bike lanes in Toronto ($48M) than he's spent protecting all of Ontario's businesses from an international trade war. Ontario deserves serious leadership, that follows through on promises, and actually puts people before profits.

The mistral made painting in Arles a fight. Van Gogh drove 50cm iron pegs into the ground and roped his easel to them so he could work in the wind. He blamed it for Cézanne's clumsy touch too: "It's his easel that's wobbling."

"If your campaign is breaking your own privacy policy, or swamping your Instagram with fawning, machine-generated praise, it's your mess to clean up. The opposite impulse — to lie & attack — is not a quality voters expect of someone vying to lead Canada's largest city," writes @jameswsthomson.com.
When pressed by Habibinia to respond to CNO’s reporting, Bradford dug in.

"They're inaccurate. It's a mischaracterization. I'm surprised they published it."

It goes without saying that calling a news outlet's reporting false is a dagger to the heart. The implication that we got something wrong would give any reporter, any editor cold sweats.

Having watched White labour over every word and sentence of both investigations, it was particularly offensive to have the candidate attack his work — and our publication — so casually.

Of course we make mistakes. When we do, we issue corrections and take ownership over the failure.

But this was not one of those times. So we published a recording that should put the question of veracity permanently to bed.
