In 1841, American painter John Goffe Rand invented the collapsible paint tube, which kept colors fresh outdoors. By the 1880s, Van Gogh relied on them to work in fields and streets, making plein-air painting central to his style.

The mistral made painting in Arles a fight. Van Gogh drove 50cm iron pegs into the ground and roped his easel to them so he could work in the wind. He blamed it for Cézanne's clumsy touch too: "It's his easel that's wobbling."

Christ in Limbo (c. 1867–69) began as a mural on the walls of Jas de Bouffan. Based on an engraving after Sebastiano del Piombo, the work captures the somber, thick-painted intensity of Cézanne's "dark period" alongside its companion, La Madeleine.

In Nuenen (1883–85), Van Gogh set out to be a “peasant painter,” following his hero Millet. His empathy for laborers—shaped in the Borinage—deepened as he painted weavers and humble meals. These themes culminated in The Potato Eaters, his raw hymn to rural toil.

Dalí titled some works like headlines. Soft Construction with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War) (1936) was painted on the eve of the Spanish Civil War. It turns political rupture into a single, contorted body on a barren stage.
