I cannot ignore this now, as I have never been able to ignore it before, because getting the science wrong leads to the wrong policy frame: if you believe that you can prevent every outbreak simply by living in harmony with nature, there is no reason to invest in preparedness or health systems.

I didn’t know Beehiiv had a program to support independent journalists. Members get access to tools, a health insurance stipend, legal protection, and waived hosting fees. Oh, and they don’t proudly host Nazis like Substack. ✌️ [niemanlab.org]

Beehiiv is the latest platform to try to lure independent journalists with perks
These types of programs are likely to continue to come and go, as the needs of journalists and the platforms’ businesses evolve.

I know this is a niche complaint, but I hate that language courses for the public are all centered around boring shit like directions to tourist destinations. I don't care! I will never remember these words, they are useless to me! Teach me the words for plants, magic, philosophy, cooking & cussing!

No, they aren’t dead, but they aren’t ok either, as much as we all want to convince ourselves that hospitalization, months of physical therapy and PTSD and/or a new lifelong disability or pain lets drivers off the hook. People find it upsetting when you push back & I’m ok with it. It is upsetting.

I have started pushing back on the question “are they ok though?” when someone gets hit by a car by saying “of course they aren’t ok, they got hit by a car” and they specify they just mean “are they dead?”

This is how the historic core of many small towns around the world preserve themselves. My high school host family in Germany lived above a store (250 yo building) & kept their car in a lot right outside the historic core. Load/unload at home, then park the car & walk home.

Cities should be paying people to bike. Cities should be buying people e-bikes. Cities should be rewarding people for convincing neighbors to ride bikes. Every trip by bike is a net financial gain socially. And it compounds, the more people who do it.

Humaning.
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, a Northern Cardinal and American Goldfinch perch above a busy crowd in a city, looking down. The cardinal says "It's a nice day to go humaning." The goldfinch says "Just look at them. Majestic." In panel 2, a close-up of the two birds. The cardinal says "Nobody tells you that you'll reach a certain age and suddenly get into humaning. I hit 3 years old, and then bam."The birds are looking out over the crowd scene. In panel 3, the cardinal says "Their calls sound funny to us, but each one has a unique meaning." Below, people are saying various things: "I'm tired." "Where's my phone?" "I'd murder a burrito." In panel 4, the birds look down excitedly at a man walking by. The cardinal says "Wait, is that a guy who got dressed in the dark and put his shirt on inside out and backwards?" And the goldfinch exclaims, "Holy... that's a lifer!"

Speeding doesn't actually save you meaningful time. All it really accomplishes is aggressively increasing the chances that you kill yourself or someone else outside your vehicle. It's a mathematically flawed, entirely selfish risk.

Facts worth repeating: It would be cheaper to pay the ~40,000 or so people employed by the coal industry $1M a year to do nothing than to pay for the health damages (not including climate change) caused by burning coal in the U.S. publichealth.hsc.wvu.edu/news/story?h...

Full sized SUVs are 2x more likely to strike pedestrians and 2x more likely to kill or seriously injure pedestrians vs passenger cars. If a child is struck by a full size SUV, they are 8x more likely to die www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
2. Literature review
2.1. Vehicle type and crash biomechanics
Desapriya et al. (2010) found that when a collision occurs, the risk of
a pedestrian sustaining a fatal injury is 50% greater with a light truck
versus a conventional car and that vehicle design characteristics such as
height, width, and length have significant associations with pedestrian
severity outcomes. In addition to the physical dimensions of the vehicles,
the authors cited light trucks’ relatively poor braking and maneuverability
as other possible contributing factors to their poor pedestrian
safety outcomes. Recent research has found that the difference is more
drastic for children, with children being eight times more likely to be
killed when struck by an SUV versus a passenger car (Edwards &
Leonard, 2022).
Front-end dimensions have been a particular focus area of past researchers.
Studies have shown that impacts with tall front-end vehicles –
including SUVs and vans – resulted in pedestrians being pushed forward
which, depending on the height of the pedestrian, sometimes resulted in
high head-ground impact speeds, likely leading to more severe injuries
(Crocetta et al., 2015; Monfort et al., 2024). Pedestrians that are pushed
to the ground by high-front-end vehicles may also be more likely to be
run over by the vehicle, as opposed to pedestrians struck by low-front-
end vehicles who may be more likely to be forced on top of the hood
(Crocetta et al., 2015).
