Currently trying to figure out if shou sugi ban would be a safe way to finish wooden beehives for fungal, pathogen, & mold resistance while also improving humidity & winter insulation, but the only discussions I can find are how pretty it is & how it lessens maintenance time & y'all. We need to talk

Today's lore drop: This was prompted by telling a friend that I was the first person in my high school to ever come out & then 2 years later another girl came out & she got put on the cover of Houston's gay magazine for it, and I was soooo pissed. Also my lesbian "grandmother" was Morgan McFarland

Polarization is not the problem. The problem: ethnonationalists threatening vulnerable citizens' rights. "The people who are the most 'polarized' in the U.S. electorate are those who are racist and sexist, and those who oppose racists and sexists." @lilymasonphd.bsky.social muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/a...

Things Gavin Newsom has vetoed this week: -A ban on secretly recording people with smart glasses -A ban on ICE agents working for the state government -A ban on websites selling your data -A bill giving native tribes more say over water rights -A bill protecting transgender healthcare providers

Sometimes people disbelieve me when I tell them the most simple thing about my life and I am unexpectedly reminded that, contrary to my own experience of my day to day, my life has probably actually been really fucking weird

Katie Britt's face, as the realization that the carefully planned political gotcha she was banking on was based on a baby level verbal mistake dawns on her with the full brilliance of the rising sun.

Christ, I live in WALES & I have heard this song while out shopping in public. I cannot fathom declaring with my whole chest that I am this averse to existing alongside other people, & everyone proudly reskeeting this to brag they have never heard it should be embarrassed if not downright ashamed.

It's been too long since I shared bee pics, so please have this picture of what is not actually a bee at all enjoying the beginnings of the ivy bloom.
A picture of a creature that looks very much like a bee on a yellow ivy blossom. It's actually a fly that mimics bees.

Without weighing in directly on the lesbian bar discourse, I'll just say that any of y'all asking in honest confusion "what happened to all the lesbian bars, anyway? where did they all go?" were never lesbians, and we can all tell.

I just found a "scientific" book in an academic library that was published by a known vanity press with a mile high stack of criticisms from librarians for its lack of quality, failure to engage in peer-review, and its use of plagiarized public domain sources, and just...what are we even doing here.

In today's version of clever shit ancient people did, please enjoy Columella's advice on how to find a wild swarm of bees to make your own🧵 1) starting a couple of hours after daybreak, find a nice cool spring or stream. Bees like to get drinks and hang out here.

He is a craven opportunist with zero moral compass & there is absolutely zero reason for you to believe he will be less corrupt than the other sociopathic craven opportunists currently running things

Fun fact: I am possibly about to develop an entire research project around a piece of scientific knowledge that was lost, not because it was wrong, but because it became unfashionable. If follow-up proves my suspicion right, this missing information underlies a contemporary research problem.

Just read that the Romans believed Alexanders, taken as a liniment and drunk, could cure rabies. I wonder if the one good thing modern medicine could get out of anti-vaxxers is, if they refuse modern medical interventions, to convince them to be test subjects for ancient medicine.

The open secret to pedagogy research is that small class sizes/maximizing educator attention per pupil is the simplest, most effective, and unfortunately the least attractive to administration thing you can do to improve learning outcomes.

I am not a classicist, but I find it useful as a historian to read ancient scientific texts because it really makes it clear how badly people read things historically, and how much of our "knowledge" of the ancients is based on dipshit readings by dipshits who didn't know how to read. E.g....

Thank you, Aristotle.
An excerpt from Aristotle's History of Animals, in which the reader is informed that "The camel's penis is so sinewy that bowstrings are actually made out of it. Elephants also copulate in unfrequented places, and particularly near rivers which they normally haunt; the female lowers her-self with her legs apart, and the male mounts and covers her. The seal copulates like the retromingent animals: seals remain together in coition for a long time, as dog and bitch also do. The male's penis is large."

It is so important for people who are rightfully skeptical of western medical and scientific practices not to get pulled down the far right rabbit hole through that skepticism. Be clear about WHY you are skeptical, what needs scientific practice isn't filling, what world you DO want instead.

I see we are once again having debates about the intellectual canon.
Things keep getting better meme:
1. Ancient Greek philosophy & history is canon for a reason
2. Yeah. Racist reasons. Abolish the canon! Read outside of Europe!
3. You can't understand Arabic contributions to modern science and philosophy without Aristotle.
4. Ideas are slutty, go mix mix
