Yeah this Cornell thing is like a mass disabling event for survivors. I am fine, I *was* fine. But now it's in the zeitgeist again so I get to be reminded of my own college experience, something I hadn't thought about in decades, on a daily basis.

23,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 joules. That’s the amount of heat the oceans absorbed in 2025. A number so huge it’s almost meaningless…until you realise it’s roughly 40× humanity’s annual energy use. The ocean is buying us time. We’re running out of it. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

We really don't talk enough about the Chinese Exclusion Act as an immense tragedy (probably because doing so would raise uncomfortable questions about our current very restrictive immigration laws). city.mofad.org/chinatown/hi...
At the time, there were virtually no restrictions on Chinese immigration to the United States, and by the early 1880s Chinatown teemed with department stores, laundries, curio shops selling paper fans and jade rings, and small restaurants. Soon the thrum of Chinatown spilled out into adjacent streets like Bayard, Elizabeth, and Mulberry. But this expansion came to an abrupt halt after 1882, with the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act by Congress, which slowed immigration to a trickle. In the year of the act, 40,000 people of Chinese origin arrived in the United States; in 1887, the country allowed entry to only 10.

Data centres in the Netherlands used 4.6% of all electricity in 2024, and transmission system operator TenneT expects this to double or triple to 10-15% by 2030! That means that the next 6-11 TWh/year of renewables that will be completed, will go straight to the growth of data centres.

Miami Dade County requires foundation inspections for this very reason, and they’ve gotten more rigorous since the Surfside condo collapse- which was partly due to corrosion by saltwater. So rising groundwater can do most of its damage before it shows up at the surface.

And as if that were not enough, pumps also lead to salinization of surface groundwater- which can accelerate the corrosion of foundations and pipes. Pumping can literally lead to both indoor air contamination and structural problems- esp in seismic regions. We don’t inspect foundations, so…
