People think Catholic and Jewish guilt are the same but it's actually getting the arrow of causality wrong. Jewish Guilt: I need my kid to do a task, so I deploy guilt. Catholic Guilt: I need my kid to feel guilt, so I deploy a task.

We remember poet, essayist, farmer, and environmentalist Wendell Berry, whose work called us toward deeper relationship with one another, the land, and the communities we share. May his words continue to inspire lives rooted in care, trust, and responsibility. #WendellBerry #UU #BelovedCommunity
Graphic memorializing Wendell Berry, August 5, 1934–August 31, 2026. Against a misty blue mountain background, a large cutout portrait of Berry appears at right, wearing glasses, a gray suit, white shirt, and tie. At left, white text reads: “A community is the mental and spiritual condition of knowing that the place is shared, and that the people who share the place define and limit the possibilities of each other’s lives.” Attribution: “—Wendell Berry, The Long-Legged House.” The Unitarian Universalist Association logo appears at lower left and http://UUA.org at lower right. I just this moment discovered that Wendell Berry has passed. I feel such grief though he lived long and well. I don’t have it in me to find an essay or a poem right now, I just know the world has been made so much better by his existence and effort, and I’m trying to focus on that gratitude.

Owl of Athena! 🦉❤️ A rare Athenian silver decadrachm, c. 467 BC. Münzkabinett der Staatlichen Museum, Berlin 📷 ArchaiOptix #Archaeology
The photo by ArchaiOptix shows the reverse of an Athenian silver decadrachm coin (a high value coin worth ten drachmas) with an image of an upright owl facing forward with outstretched wings, standing within a recessed square. The owl gazes directly at the viewer with large round eyes. At the top left corner is an olive sprig with two leaves. From the top right corner the letters A Θ E (“Athens”) run clockwise, with A in upper right corner and Θ and E above the owl’s feet. Weight 42.6g. Diameter 35mm. Dated circa 467 BC. Only some 40 (authentic) examples of the Athenian decadrachm are known. This example is housed in the Numismatic Collection of the State Museum in Berlin.

Cory Doctorow was interviewed by Anna Foster on BBC Radio 4 Today on the topic of AI. I've captured a transcript of the questions here in a short thread (with the help of Google AI voice-to-text. Good AI, thank-you.) 1/5
AF: We could spend the whole of the rest of the day talking about AI but sometimes we need focus…

CD: Oh God, must we?

AF: We must, we must and while we decided to focus on this idea of a crisis of control, do you think that there is one?

CD: I think AI is the money-losing-est thing the human race has ever done, I think it's grossly oversold and I think that the capital markets have lost their minds because of the confluence of large tech monopolies that have saturated their markets and need to convince investors that they can keep growing despite the fact that they have 90% market shares and the fact that they have a large customer base of bosses who are just infinitely excited at the prospect of firing mouthy workers who know how to do things that they don't know how to do and replacing them with software that compliantly does whatever it's told.

[Scene is a TV news DEBATE FORMAT like Newsnight or Laura K.
In the studio, NIGEL FARAGE is a guest on one side, and the GOVERNOR OF THE BANK OF ENGLAND is the other guest.]

1
FARAGE:
It's simply outrageous!

2
FARAGE:
Replacing Sir Winston Churchill on the £5 note with a badger is woke madness.

3
BANK OF ENGLAND GOVERNOR:
Mr Farage, I can assure you that I and my colleagues at the Bank of England have listened to your concerns,

4
GOVERNOR:
And we have gone to great length to ensure
that the badger is, in fact...

5
GOVERNOR:
...Anti-woke.

[The £5 note appears on the screen behind him. It shows a badger, with a black military cap on its head - looking suspiciously like a Nazi SS officer's cap.]

6
[Beat of Nigel Farage reacting silently to the image on screen]

7
FARAGE:
The badger is anti-woke.

8
GOVERNOR:
Indeed!
[Pointing at the design on the screen]
If you look down the bottom we've included a quote from him...

9
[Close up of the quote at the bottom of the new £5 note, which reads]:

"It's not racist to be concerned about immigration, Carol"
- The Anti-Woke Badger

10
FARAGE:
The badger... said that?

GOVERNOR:
It's a comment he posted on Facebook.

11
FARAGE:
Well he's quite right! It's not -

12
[Farage pauses again, distracted by the image on the screen]

13
FARAGE:
What's with the hat?

GOVERNOR:
He's into history.
